Yah. In the US hardly anybody fears getting attacked by a shark. Maybe a handful of people in California. Certainly not around here. Probably nobody in Alice Springs does, either (though they may think that all of you near the coast are at great danger). But we fear other things that are of stupidly low probability, including automobiles, Muslims, Blacks, etc.

I didn't want to call up the ghost of Godwin. Hermann Goering was the source. I think it might have more impact without attribution, because it's clearly true, and people might reject it if they knew the source. I do believe that Churchill handled the war quite well, with some spectacular fuckups that are inevitable with something on that scale, but believe that much of his pre war policy was just plain wrong and that he was part of the complete terminal stupidity that made WW1 inevitable. I do have a lot of respect for some people like George Marshall who did ensure that we wouldn’t have another full world war in the next generation, unlike the fools that organised things after WW1 had ended. True. But at the same time, it is necessary to understand Russian history and the conditions that led to the takeover by the Bolsheviks. The Bolsheviks were as cruel as the Nazis. Democracy is difficult. The U.S. had to suffer through an incompetent government--the Articles of Confederation--and then a bloody civil war before it moved forward. Even then it wasn't a true democracy at all as many groups were disenfranchised. Amazingly, there are many people today who want to roll back the protections and reforms of the New Deal, and even the protections of Teddy Roosevelt and anti-trust.

Hitler did get the german economy out of the great depression in precisely the same way FDR did, massive govt keynesian deficit spending, well before FDR did it too. His problem was that he went on to invade poland etc as well.
