In other words you know of no example in which anybody in either city was effectively protected by something resembliing an elementary school desk. Your going on about "shelters" is irrelevant--the issued is the "duck and cover" drills that involved hiding under an elementary school student desk. If the drills have involved going into a fortified bunker they would have seemed much less ridiculous, but there was no such bunker available in most schools.

The older schools in NYC with basements that used to have coal storage (my PS114 still had coal boilers in the 60's, I think) were also places with the Civil Defense logos -- so I think they were also Air Raid shelters. I suspect their focus would have been on very big cities which had a high population density. To be complete, they had to include the little schools. Going in the halls would not be good because the brick walls would collapse so the choice to go under the desk was probably the best. Now that I think about it, I don't remember how people would know the difference between a tornado warning siren and a bomb siren since both warnings came from the same siren. the tornado siren here is still tested at noon on the first of every month. /BAH

We kids freaked out one day when the Noon siren went off in town. We thought it was an air raid siren and the bombs were on the way. It was on a Saturday. I found out later that day that the Noon siren was Monday thru Friday only. Never found out why it was run on that Saturday. -- JimP.

Never heard them in Freehold, Freehold Township or Lakewood Township. I wonder if that job has moved to the Emergency Broadcast System which now gets even cable tv as well as radio and tv... Around this area, tornado zone, there are large poles with sirens and 'Big Voice' speakers. They both get getest the first Tuesday of every month. This is out in the county as well. -- JimP.

I haven't been down to the city, so I don't know if the sirens are still in place or still used. In the 'burbs, the firehouses still use sirens, though ours is electronic now. I think the firemen also use phones.

Where I grew up, the normal reaction was to say "wonder where the fire is" and listen to see if you could tell from the sound where the truck was going. They didn't blow the siren for EMS, that call would go to a pro ambulance crew 10 miles away. Even back in the early 1980s, our volunteer firefighters had pagers. A siren wouldn't have worked because you couldn't hear them indoors; they were only intended to tell people who were _outdoors_ to take cover.
