Make that apparently was not effected by the Great Depression. Lenin and
Stalin sent too many people to gulags just to stay in office unless
there was a major depression.

Dramatically less affected. In fact quite a bit of the effect of
the Great Depression on the USSR was a dramatic reduction
in the amount of support for industrialisation in the USSR
from the west due to the Great Depression making it much
harder to justify back home when there was such a desperate
need to fund what the west was doing back home instead.

The Great Depression wasn’t the reason for the gulags.
Many of them were essentially just slave labour which
was used to build what would otherwise not have been
possible to build like so much of the railway system
and so much of the more remote mines etc that no
one would have got involved in voluntarily.

But there is no question that the US had an active espionage > and sabotage unit at work in the USSR as well. Not really, and certainly not as a effective as the USSR's operations in the U.S. For one thing, the Soviets had a long history of espionage dating back to the Czars, which the Bolsheviks simply took over. Stalin's apparatus was solidly in place and in operation, as well documented. In contrast, the US never went in for that sort of thing, and had a haphazard spy network in WW II. It was only afterwards that the CIA was established, and it took time to build it up. In any event, Soviet spies and saboteurs took great advantage of the free society of the US. They got tons of information just from the newspaper and published papers. It was easy for them to recruit agents who worked in industry and government. In contrast, Americans who visited the Soviet Union were closely monitored, as were any citizens who might have had contact with them. There weren't any published sources of material.

There were many in the US that publicly argued for a preemptive strike before the USSR got its own nukes, and it was not unreasonable to worry that a US president might have done so. After they got them and everyone fully understood MAD, things settled into the Cold War, which ironically became one of the most peaceful--though tense--periods in human history. Unfortunately, religious fanatics are inherently immune to logic, so we need to find another way to deal with them--both at home and abroad. > Yes, the USSR suffered terrible damage and loss of live, but it made > no difference. Stalin didn't _want_ a war, but he had good reason to be paranoid after being betrayed by Hitler; he trusted MAD more than NATO's promises of non-aggression, just like we trusted MAD more than his promises. Reagan's strategy of goading the Soviets into spending themselves into bankruptcy was ingenious. Too bad his successors didn't understand they were supposed to end that after the USSR collapsed and instead have all gone looking for new enemies to replace them. While they're glad to see the Communists out, I don't think you will find very many of them who would tell you that inflicting another 20+ million casualties removing them would have been a worthwhile exchange.

Um, if this took place before Russia had nuclear weapons, but after the U.S. did, we're not talking about any Polish or Czech or Hungarian casualties, just Russian casualties. John Savard

So how are you going to get to Russia? And I guess it's OK with you that 20 million or so Russians die, because, of course, according to you, they're EEEEEEVVVVVVIIIIIILLLLLL.

I wasn't commenting on what was OK with me, but somehow I suspect it wouldn't be that much of a problem for the Czechs and the Hungarians and so on. Just as it wouldn't be that much of a problem for Americans if it was the price of preventing many Americans from dying, or of Communist rule in *their* own country. A lot of German civilians died in World War II. Were they eeevill? That's not really the point. Once there's a situation like a war, where aggression can't be stopped without some civilian casualties in the nation the government of which engaged in the aggression, well, better strangers than us and those we love. Nor do I think that a nuclear attack on Soviet Russia would need to kill 20 million people to achieve surrender. Just be sure to kill Stalin and his top men; then there would be little percentage in continuing to fight. John Savard

So how many "Czechs and Hungarians" do you know personally who lived under Communism? Have you asked them whether they feel that continuing the war with tens of millions more deaths would have been desirable? > Just as > it wouldn't be that much of a problem for Americans if it was the price of > preventing many Americans from dying, or of Communist rule in *their* own > country. You really think that the Soviet Union could be defeated by the US with _zero_ US deaths? You're inhabiting a dream world. > A lot of German civilians died in World War II. Were they eeevill? So where was the "aggression" by the Soviets? They took down the Nazis and then didn't completely relinquish the territory that they had to pass through to get to Germany. > Nor do I think that a nuclear attack on Soviet Russia would need to kill 20 > million people to achieve surrender. He found out otherwise. You seem to be one of those morons who thinks that you can drop a few bombs and your enemy is going to turn belly-up. If you don't want to see massive FOBS coming at you one day, you better damn well occupy the place, and nukes be damned, you're going to be slogging through the snow with vast quantities of very angry Russians doing their best to ruin your day.

Actually, preventing the people of Poland, Czechoslovakia, and so on from having democratic elections, despite being entrusted with supervising those countries until they did so, was in violation of the terms of the Yalta agreement. And when it comes to Poland, the Soviet Union was as aggressive as Germany, as they invaded it together. John Savard

The Soviets regularly held democratic elections; people could vote for anyone on the ballot! They just removed any non-Communists from the ballot, as China has been attempting to do recently in Hong Kong. While obviously a rather different strategy, it doesn't seem like the result is much different from US politicians using gerrymandering to pick their voters rather than letting voters pick the politicians. That worked REAL well in Iraq and Afghanistan and Vietnam.

And the Russians aren't as fanatical as the Japanese. Yeah, beating the crap out of them for four years, taking every island they ever held, sinking their navy, burning every single one of their cities to the ground, shooting down their air force, cutting off their fuel supply and raw materials, and the Russians putting boots on the ground in their territory, all of that had nothing to do with it, it was just two bombs. > > you're going to be slogging through the snow > > with vast quantities of very angry Russians doing their best to ruin > > your day. > > If they don't welcome us as liberators, they deserve what they get. The Russians aren't going to see _anybody_ who is planting their muddy boots on Mother Russia as a "liberator", Quadi.

Actually, when the Germans invaded the Soviet Union, _at first_, the people felt liberated. Life under Stalin was not good. However, very quickly they discovered that the Germans were just as bad.
