There is quite a body of literature on the impact of Hiroshima,
the 9/11 Pentagon attack, as well as others.

There was also reserach into nuclear bomb effects.

One cause of casualties is flying glass and objects. A kid under
his school desk is at less risk from being impaled by broken glass
or beaned by a textbook.

Many schools had basements and they were used for shelter.

If it is actually a desk and not a chair with a particle board postage
stamp attached.

None of them that I attended had basements. Basements seem to be a
northern thing.

Since the particle board postage stamp isn't going to protect us anyway,
what happens after the bomb kills us isn't an issue.

The schools didn't have anything resembling a shelter.

Oh it will probably save your eyes if a bomb went off sufficiently
far away, which is probably all the folks on the outskirts of Hiroshima or
Nagasaki would need. There's an old story in the Go playing world about
the 1945 Honinbo tournament which was played outside one of those two (ICBA
to look up which) at just the wrong time. After the building stopped
shaking the players replaced the stones on the board an carried on playing,
it wasn't until some hours later they discovered that the nearby city was
no longer there.

Of course by the 1960s the bombs were a lot more powerful, there
were a *lot* more of them and nobody was talking about dropping just one or
two. I was probably about ten when I decided the best place to be if the
bombs dropped was ground zero.

And if by some miracle the postage stamp was actually between your eyes
and the flash.

It wasn't just those on the outskirts of Hiroshima and Nagasaki that
survived and both were a lot more lightly constructed than US schools.

Yes, but the duck and cover campaign started in the very early 50s
when Russia had very few nukes at all and very little delivery capability
to the US.

Many who survived Hiroshima and Nagasaki disagree.

Yes, I think it was more a protection from the ceiling falling in than an
atomic blast.

It really depended on where you were. Close in, no luck. Further out,
maybe radiation problems. Somewhere it would just be falling bricks. If
you were close in, nothing would help, but they were trying to limit the
damage in ways that were practical. YOu weren't expected to get enough
warning to hide in the basement, not if you were at school. So hiding
under the desk was better than nothing, especially if it was more that the
ceiling would collapse.

The desk would protect against falling debris, which is fairly unlikely in
the case. OTOH, I believe schools might still do this for tornado drills,
although they now seem to favor moving to an inside corrodor.

We also had tornado drills and fire drills.

Our desks were extremely sturdy. They were made of iron and wood and
had ink pots.

I remember those from my brief experience with Catholic school. The
public schools went for the cheapest things they could find.

It is clear that you are convinced that you know far more about what it
was like to live in the '50s and '60s than those who lived through those
eras. In other words you are clearly delusional, which makes you
mentally ill, and I'm not wasting further time on you.

Or to put it another way, I knew Jack, Jack was a friend of mine, and
you, sir, are no Jack.

Or to put it in terms that even you might comprehend,

The desks in my grade school were probably 50 years old so that was
"cheapest" :-). The ones you've been describing were in my high
school which was a new school. That design was useless since
a kid also had to use his/her lap and the floor as a desk.
But those didn't show up in my area until well after the US government
gave up edicting bomb drills.

These days, kids have terrorism drills.

In which they are no doubt made to hide behind the same particle-board
postage stamps, because, after all, if they will stop an atom bomb they
shouldn't have any problem with a mere bullet.

No, the reports I heard actually give the kids something to do if an

On the one hand, "well, it may not do any good but if something
happens we can't be blamed", on the other hand, if you can keep people
(kids, but more their parents) frightened, they're easy to manipulate.

There isnt any evidence of their parents being manipulated by those drills.

We are swamped by references to the terrorist "threat" (never mind
that your chances of getting hurt falling down stairs are far more
likely, they ignore my pleas to ban stairs). Colored alerts, signs
flashing "IF YOU SEE SOMETHING SAY SOMETHING", metal detectors,
special ID to board aircraft (and secret lists of names to prevent
boarding aircraft), NSA sweeps of our (and your) phone data,
photographing (the outside, at least) of your mail, security personnel
confronting people taking pictures, police driving armored vehicles.
Terrorist drills in schools are just one tiny part. At the lower
levels (say, school administrator) they're fearful, they're impacted
by the same things that the rest of us are.

It's not those drills by themselves, they're part of a larger
constellation.

Fear of "the other" is a technique for manipulating populations that's
thousands of year old, probably back to the week after men figured out
how to communicate with each other. If you don't think some of those
driving it are doing so intentionally, Rod, you have a far more
generous and trusting view of the ethics of politicians and policemen
than I do.

When I was in middle school there was a required course, "Americanism vs
Communism". I never expected that the government would use the
description of Communism provided in the text for that course as an idea
book.

I'm glad I took the course, even though it was blatant propaganda. It
makes what the government is up to these days absolutely chilling. I'm
kind of glad I'm approaching geezerhood and won't likely be around when
it all comes to fruition, but I pity the kids.

Still, I know people who grew up in the Soviet Union or its satellites
and in China and they tell me that it was (or in the case of China is)
not nearly as unpleasant as it is made out to be, mostly because it was
what they were used to.
