In our universities the dentists have female rates near 60%, medicine near parity, social sciences too. Economics is making a great shift, from around 15% for decades up to parity. Law and natural sciences hover around 20% and has done so for decades. Except the teaching courses, which are near 60%. -- mrr

I was taking a class at Univac Blue Bell. I decided to take a break and wander around, something in itself not allowed today. Anyway, a man working in his lab invited me to show me a product under development. I doubt security would allow that kind of thing today.

He gave us explicit orders to "wander around" customer sites (like Sandia, Boeing Missiles and Space, Aerojet, . . .) and see what we could learn. When we came back having not wandered, we got yelled at. One day he decided to go with us to Boeing and show us how it was done. Not sure where exactly he wandered to, but after the meeting was over our chief engineer had to bail the CEO out of jail. We got no more crap about "wandering around" after that.

Well, I suspect there were certain labs of Univac that handled military work and were probably off-limits. Probably some other labs or offices too. Companies that had defense contracts could often be very strict about security--the military demanded it. (My uncle's employer had defense contracts but no security. They made bathing suits for the military.) On the other hand, I once visited a military Arsenal and was surprised by the relatively low security. I had to be checked in and escorted to my destination. But the guards were old men, not crisp MP's that I expected. Once I entered the complex, there wasn't any building security. When I was done, I walked out on my own. FWIW, the facility is now closed.

> On the other hand, I once visited a military Arsenal ... ObComp: I think they had a S/370-158 to handle administrative tasks, but maybe it was a S/360-50. Employees submitted a punched-card timesheet, using the IBM Porta Punch. That used a pre-scored card, a plastic box, and a stylus to hand-punch the card.

The real joke was that he was Navy Reserve and flew one a couple of weeknds a month.

He was denied because he didn't have the required clearance. /BAH

The E2 at Grumman likely had classified equipment that would have been removed or disguised on an airshow aircraft.

Nope. The Navy doesn't take planes apart to fly them to airshows.
