I felt the items listed did indeed reflect the cultural atmosphere of the times. AFAIK, _adults_ (not kids) did always wear a tie to work at office jobs, and often wore a tie to go out socializing. Family photographs of even informal visits show my parents and their guests in nice clothing. This year, it was warm at Christmas, and some guests at dinner had on flip flops and gym shorts, which I felt was quite a contrast. I will note that in the 1975, the mens' clothes were stylish of the time--wide bright ties, jackets with fancy stitching, colored shirts. I think it was called the "mod" look or a remnant thereof. No one was wearing a conservative "IBM suit". It matches the photos I have of my workplace from that era. Going further back, there's a 1954 film, Picnic, where a man is chastised by his wife for not wearing a _jacket_ to the _summer_ picnic. He is wearing a necktie, and there's no question about that.

He had a university job, but I don't know if he was teaching, I don't remember him dressing up, but I remember his heavy parka and boots that I think came back with him the time he went up north to collect specimens. I was too young, but that time in 63 or 64, I thought he was collecting specimens in Oregon. I have no idea what we were doing in Denmark in 64-65, it had to be university related but I don't know. I can remember a mate of mine being puzzled about some wearing jumpers on stinking hot weather during the summer harvest, of wheat presumably. Not clear why some did that. During WW2 plenty wore just short shorts and nothing else but boots, particularly in the tropics with the always rather undisciplined airforce mechanics and ammunition loaders etc.

I gotta say, I thank goodness for a/c in the summer. That is one aspect of the past I would _not_ want to live in. I know materials were thinner back then "seersucker", but I would not want to work in an office without a/c, wearing a long sleeve shirt, trousers, and a freakin' jacket. My first car didn't have a/c, and driving home in bumper-to-bumper traffic in the hot summer was not fun. (nor were family trips in the summer when we were stuck on traffic.)

I was just reading something about "leisure suits", which I knew about,
but not sure I really grasped. But they had a photo of men in various
"leisure suits", so now I have a better idea. It's less about the
"polyester" makeup of the suits, but less conservative styling, more
variety. So that accounts for people wearing almost jungle safari
outfits, you could get suits in that period that had more pockets and a
lighter material. I suppose the real change was fewer wore ties with
them.

Another change was that the jackets were 'loud', certainly more so than a traditional sport jacket or suit jacket. The polyester certainly had something to do with (as with the suits and jackets in that film). And yes, the many pockets or "safari" cut, too. Someone wearing a 'leisure suit' in that time frame certainly stood out. However, in 1975, beyond IBM and some conservative businesses, most men were wearing 'loud' clothes. Some sport jackets, slacks, and shirts were of a loud plaid. One TV station now has Johnny Carson reruns from that era; and Carson's and McMahon's clothes certainly stand out. Curiously, although suits are much more rare these days, when people do wear them, they tend to be rather conservative.
