So let's see, somebody has a car, the state prevents him from using it, and now it's my responsibility to drive him to work. You are an example of why we have so much poverty in the US--you have somebody who's barely hanging on and your solution is to push him over the edge.

You're an idiot. No, a realist. But then you're in England where somebody who in the US would be living on a park bench is provided a comfortable flat courtesy of the government, so I don't think that any comments that you might have concerning non-governmental solutions have any validity at all.

They seem to be widely used in Russia, and make for very entertaining videos. I am told that the traffic police in Russia can be easily influenced , when arriving at a crash, by the one involved that has more ready cash, and the dashcam can counter that. -- greymaus . . ...

The problem with going without is that if you get stopped, in this state anyway, it's driving an unregistered vehicle, a huge fine, and the vehicle can be impounded.

And that's the problem -- we either have to undo five decades of urban planning, implement effective public transportation, or find a private transportation solution for the "working poor". Telling someone after the fact "Well - you should have just been born into a wealthy family like I was" or "Well - you should have just been born smarter and more skillful like I was", or even "You should have put away more money during the fat years, so when the lean years came you'd not be in this situation" is absolutely POINTLESS. There is no quantity of subjunctive verbs that will alleviate hunger and homelessness. There's another piece of fiction that touches on this issue -- it's a quickly moving novella. http://marshallbrain.com/manna1.htm --NK1G

Yes, but hundreds of millions who don't have any of that do fine anyway. > There is no quantity of subjunctive verbs that will alleviate hunger There is no real hunger in the modern first and second world, the problem is the obesity epidemic, PARTICULARLY with the 'working poor' > and homelessness. One thing we had in the UK when I was young that seems to have gone by the board was a cycling poficiency test administered by the police usually at primary schools. The standard rule was you may cycle to school when you've passed it. It involved cycling a simulated road course making proper signals and so forth as well as weaving between cones without stopping or falling off. Then I grew up in Cambridge, took the training wheels of my bike on my fourth birthday and abandoned the pavement for the road soon after. -- Steve O'Hara-Smith | Directable Mirror Arrays C:>WIN | A better way to focus the sun The computer obeys and wins. | licences available see You lose and Bill collects. | http://www.sohara.org/

This was middle school - kids aged around 10-12. Parents blew up and they had a sort of "bike-in" where the parents rode with the kids for a few days. I'm not sure what the result was, but I think kids can now bike to school. When I was that age I think I rode all over the county, north to south and east to west, and beyond, often by myself, sometimes on busy highways. > Then I grew up in Cambridge, took the training wheels of my bike > on my fourth birthday and abandoned the pavement for the road soon after. > -- Pete

Even cyclist-loathing me (*) passed the cycling proficiency test and cycled
to school.
(* Nothing to do with *cycling*, everything to do with *cyclists*.)

I don't believe that most of the poor who we are discussing take any notice of safety experts. And I just passed a kid on a bike doing that this morning, must have been about 12 on one of the main traffic routes in my town.

Most of they would have ridden one as a child. Most people here have ridden one as a child too - however when you see them on the road, especially the lycra clad ones, they clearly have no idea how to ride on the road. They wobble about, ride two, three and even four abreast even when there is traffic, never signal, ignore traffic lights and pedestrian crossings, never look behind them and are in general a hazard to themselves and everyone else around. It is clear that if they were ever taught how to ride safely in traffic they have forgotten it all. There are exceptions, and they stand out. -- Steve O'Hara-Smith | Directable Mirror Arrays C:>WIN | A better way to focus the sun The computer obeys and wins. | licences available see You lose and Bill collects. | http://www.sohara.org/

Mainly because they are much slower than cars and have very little protection when things go bad. It is clear that if they > were ever taught how to ride safely in traffic they have forgotten it all. I think its more they choose not to do it that way when they do that. Like that kid I saw yesterday riding on the wrong side of the road on a major thoroughfare in my town, well off the side of that road tho that doesn't have a proper gutter on that side of the road. > There are exceptions, and they stand out. I do come across quite a few tearing around on the bush tracks that I walk on for exercise, on their non road bikes. Never had any problem with them, they are very careful to not run you over and I always get a thank you when I get out of the road and let them past. There is a big pack of the lycra clad ones that do charge around in a groups of anything up to 30 or so at times, but they are really just a minor nuisance out on the major roads outside town where they are much slower than the 100KMPH speed limit. Sposed to be much worse in the CBDs of the state capitals but I didn't see much of that the last time I was there just a couple of weeks ago.
