Allegedly the Hiroshima bomb changed the mindset mainly in proving that the USofA was further along in the development of nukes than the Japanese had presumed. The Nagasaki bomb demonstrated that we had more than one of them. From there, it was a poker bluff that we could produce enough to follow up on Truman's threat. That, plus the Japanese building style being more affected by any high temperature explosive than just about any other advanced society. As for damage, the firebombing did more. Then, there is the Russian construction methods of the time--designed for far more severe weather and not as many earthquakes. Not nearly so vulnerable to nukes of the 20 kt range of that time. Moscow could have shrugged off a Hiroshima sized nuke--where the survivors would probably be royally pissed off and looking for revenge. As for taking out the other large Russian cities, we didn't have enough uranium processing capacity at the time to do much more than bluff.

The flight path to Hiroshima was essentially uncontested--and the folks on the ground seeing just a single bomber assumed it was just another leaflet dropping mission. Flying from Paris [Turkey is closer] to Moscow would require flying over some fairly well defended territory.

Just a quick comment... From 1948 both the RAF and USAF were flying espionage missions over Russia. The Russians were so worried that these might be used as a cover for a pre-emptive nuclear strike they issued orders that any aircraft crossing East Germany toward Russia that refused to land should be shot down. A number of planes _were_ shot down and around 250 aircrew killed. About a hundred of these are still listed as "Missing in Action" as their remains have never been recovered. Wikipedia has a writeup, but I've seen that story several places. I don't recall where the bit about crushing antitank positions came from, but the KV-2 was extremely large, well-armored, and heavy (also slow.. they were designed for attacking fortifications), and German antitank guns didn't have much of an effect on it unless they were able to knock a track off. A few fighters could have shot down one or both of our only two > bombs. > There was a pretty significant crash program to increase the USofA Uranium availability, where the gov't sent bulldozers in to large areas of BLM and other government lands in Colorado/Utah to help provide prospector access hoping that this would produce more strikes. Many of those old trails still exist to the delight of the Moab/Green River area off-road enthusiasts. I honestly don't recall if Charlie Steen benefited from those trails, but Ace Acerson did along with a few others.

The Soviet troops were in place and Stalin, being an absolete dictator, could've gone to war to protect his conquests. Perhaps FDR could've wrung a few more concessions from Stalin, but he was substantially limited. The final defeat of Germany required hand-to-hand combat in the streets. Eisenhower wisely let the Soviets do that. To have saved eastern Europe, Allied troops would have had to invade all of Germany, then proceed eastward at enormous cost in lives, materiel, and time, all of which they did not have, but Stalin did have. Also, Stalin sought more, but was pushed back, such as forced out of Iran, Greece, and Turkey. Later, he was forced to back off from taking Berlin.

This has been said, but given the feelings toward communism before and after the war I think they could have easily been convinced to swap one enemy for another. I don’t. Don’t forget how hard to was to get the US involved in the war in europe, it took Pearl Harbour to do that. And it was quite surprising the Churchill and FDR did manage to get the US to concentrate on europe first before stomping out the Japs. > "We've always been at war with Eurasia."
