Once Hitler took power, he set up a police state, with tight control over the media and public expressions of opinion. By 1939, anyone who thought going to war was a bad idea had to keep their mouths shut. So, it's tough to say what Germans really felt. (Indeed, it's tough to say if Hitler honestly won election since his thugs physically attacked any opposition).
