Various narratives has Hitler believing that if he had swift advance and threatened Moscow ... they would sue for peace (he believed Russia capitulating preventing turning into another Napoleon). However, Stalin didn't work that way, Russia took horrible damage ... and Stalin just continued on. There are stories like large numberrs of new russian recruits being issued wooden rifle replicas (that didn't shoot) and sent to the front lines ... any attempts at desertion, they would be shot (sometimes in large numbers). US officials seeing what Russia suffered at the hands of Germany, had no doubt about Stalin's resolve. Rest is just somebody's fantasy. -- virtualization experience starting Jan1968, online at home since Mar1970

recommendation today in military group http://www.amazon.com/Moscow-1941-City-Its-People-ebook/dp/B002UZ5J2W/ In 1941 close to one million Russian soldiers died defending Moscow from German invasionâ--more causalities than that of the United States and Britain during all of World War II. Many of these soldiers were in fact not soldiers at all, but instead ordinary people who took up arms to defend their city. Students dropped their books for guns; released prisoners exchanged their freedom for battle; and women fought alongside men on the bloody, mud-covered frozen road to Moscow. By the time the United States entered the war the Germans were already retreating and a decisive victory had been won for the Allies. ... snip ... -- virtualization experience starting Jan1968, online at home since Mar1970

That last is very arguable indeed. There is a lot of evidence that they were changing their mindset at that time regardless. > Also, consider how long it took to change the mindset of the Germans. It didn’t really, we never saw anything like what happened in Iraq and Afghanistan after they put their hands up officially.

Well, once we decided to totally eliminate the Iraqi army, we provided a lot of battle hardened [iran-iraq war] talent to vulnerable ISIL recruiters. As for Afghanistan, we had about as much luck getting rid of the Taliban [that we armed and trained] as the Russians did.

We didn’t change the mindset of the Germans, they changed that themselves, essentially by losing that war.

WWI did not change the mindset of the Germans so we had to have WWII to finish that job. We are currently in a war where it will probably take 100 years to change the minset of the "losers". I don't think you know what I mean by "mindset change". /BAH

Once all the Germans were warlike and mean,
But that couldn't happen again.
We taught them a lesson in 1918,
And they've hardly bothered us since then.

The philosopher responsible for my .sig quote was involved in the Paris Peace Conference as a young man. Herbert James Paton. In any event, the article of his in that multi-volume work correctly predicts WWII. I required access to the UofT Robart's library to access it. And in the spirit of thread drift, I should note that a book entitled "Secret War" which I stumbled upon through other research was withdrawn from the library and its catalogue in and around the 2003 timeframe when I was mucking about in the stacks at that "university". -- We all cannot be intelligent, but at least we can all be polite.
