They were fast to make because various shipbuilders thought of new ways to build them much faster than before. A Mr. Kaiser developed very fast methods and became kind of a hero in his day. Some remained in service until the 1970s. WW II created innovations in many areas with positive postwar results in industry and technology. Too bad it had to be a war that did that.

Most popular cruise is during Fleet Week - watching the blue angels over the bay from the deck of a WWII freighter is pretty cool.

I have a childhood friend who was insistent on making a career as a pilot. He was too tall for the Air Force, so he went to the US and took training out somewhere in Kansas, and this flying school was good; lots of flying time; but not particularly well regarded in Europe. So he went to Sao Tome for 3 years, and amassed around 3x as much flying time per year as our rather stricter than EU regulations allow. He landed a job with Wideroe, our small propeller-based commuter air line to the rural places in Norway. And his first plane inspection nearly drew industrial action from the maintainers. He REALLY checked the plane. In Sao Tome with old DC3s this was literally his life in the balance. Not so much in Wideroe. He went back to Sao Tome again, whenever he needed the money. 14 hours net flying time on one shift. Plus unloading inside Africa. Not even a snowballs chance in hell of making an EU certification for that airline. They didn't even attempt a passenger certificate for Nigeria. He last went in 2004, they were still using DC3s then. He must have had a near record number of DC3 hours of any active pilot today. -- mrr

Yeah, Buffalo Airways that operates out of Yellowknife in northern Canada definitely does. They're the operation in that reality TV series Ice Pilots.
