There was a Canadian army in both wars, but in World War I, Canada was at war because Britain declared war; in World War II, Canada's government declared war on its own account shortly after Britain did. Although Canada was no longer a British colony in 1914, having been formed as a self-governing Dominion in 1867 through four colonies becoming the provinces of a new federation, it was not until the Statute of Westminster in 1931 that it was a fully independent nation in some important senses, such as having control over its own foreign relations. (Constitutional amendments were still in British hands until the patriation of the Constitution in 1982.) John Savard

I heard very varying stories on WW II assignments. Apparently, some men were assigned to the civilian trade, but many others were retrained. Supposedly, many Bell Telephone men were assigned to the Signal Corps. Railroad men supposedly to transportation batallions. Cops became MP's. One problem for infantry men after the war was getting a job. First, people feared they might have had combat "issues". Second, being a 'rifleman' job title wasn't a high job skill. Some guys got technology training, such as radio or other electronics, and had a leg up on a postwar career. Postwar employers were desperate to hire electronic specialists.

They had to develop special automatic equipment since the drivers would forget to do certain things and ruin the truck, at a time when vehicles were critically needed. One example was the DUKW amphibious trucks. The tires had low pressure for driving on the beach, but then had to be inflated for road use. The drivers forgot to inflate them. They automated that. The Army histories are pretty candid about screwups. For instance, the Q/M book says that its Lemonade drink was so bad that soldiers used it to wash the floor instead of a beverage. It also talks about the problems with emergency food rations and feeding combat troops. For instance, the food Spam wasn't bad in itself, but when it was offered for three meals a day, day after day, soldiers got sick of it pretty quickly.

But I guess that a second set of wheels that went sideways would have just been a total disaster for fuel economy. Better to accommodate deficiencies than bear their consequences in dented fenders.
