Edward VIII _was_ the king. Not only over England, but of the biggest empire the world has ever seen. An entire strip of land from Cape Town to Alexandria were either colonies, dominions or protectorates of this empire. The entire Indian subcontient from the Afghan borders to well into the Indian Ocean, from the Pashtun tribal areas to the river Kwai were his to reign. There _was_ no other British royalty. "Bertie" was shocked to his bone when he realised he had to take over. He had that royal sense of duty that his older brother lacked. Churchill was a has-been with a mixed record from ww1, but he led a small minority fraction of the Tory party. It wasn't until the "Norway debate" May 10th 1940 (about the woeful support to the Norwegian government resisting the German invasion) that he won the support of the Tory party, and secured Liberal and Labour support "for the duration". Before that he was just a fringe war-mongerer. For a war that was becoming inevitable, and was formally declared 8 months earlier. -- mrr
