There were people who joined the U.S. Coast Guard in the hopes of avoiding combat exposure. But they ended up being sent to 'Nam as support, facing the very stuff you describe.

I think it was separate. My grandfather was a Canadian soldier in WWI, and was blinded by a single piece of shrapnel across his face. This happened on Armistice day. He was shipped to Brighton in the UK, to St Dunstans, a place for blind veterans. The local girls used to volunteer to guide them round the town. My grandmother guided him, and they married! He died 27 years later from a piece of shrapnel in his head (that they couldn't get out). -- Using UNIX since v6 (1975)... Use the BIG mirror service in the UK: http://www.mirrorservice.org

Under general British control, OK, in such disasters as the Dardenelles. AFAIK, this continued in WWII, when the Australian units were sent back to Australia to defend against the Japaanese, that seem to be a tipping point, at which point Australia realized that the US was a more useful ally than the UK. AFAIK, as well, the Australians joined the the anti-Boxer expedition as a seperate-from UK force. -- greymaus . . ...

Prior to WW2 it was officially the Canadian Militia. A Canadaian Expeditionary Force went to France in WW1. There was a Royal Canadian Navy also. -- Stan Barr plan.b@bluesomatic.org

In WW II, many Americans who wanted to fly went to Canada to join their air corps. Ironic in that in WW II, people went to Canada to fight, and in Vietnam people went to Canada to not fight. But the reality is that in WW II, plenty of people attempted to get draft deferments for whatever reason, or get assigned to easier duty. If people had political connections they would exploit them. Also, plenty of people participated in the black market for premium food and gasoline. Business people lobbied for war contracts. Towns lobbied to get a war plant or not get a war plant depending on selfish interests, not the national interest. In the U.S., people certainly were united and supported the war effort, but a lot of crap was going on underneath the surface--it wasn't the super idealized time people think it was.

I'm so disappointed. I had this idealized version of history and there you go trying to destroy it. Of course a statement like "plenty of people" is so vague as to be irrefutable. I doubt by mom would be trying to evade rationing with her husband in the navy. Even if he was in a band. Google didn't help with any statistics. I don't remember any stories about draft dodging or sneaky rationing. I'm guessing your statements are from word of mouth? -- Dan Espen

Well, a small sample isn't going to prove much of anything. But me and a veteran friend of mine were talking to another guy of the same age and he bragged that he, or his family, had arranged for an MD to get him declared 4F. We never talked to him again unless it was required by the work. This was Korean era but attitudes were much the same.

Yes, but South Korea was attacked in the Korean War, just as Poland was attacked in World War II. The difference, from a United States perspective, I suppose, is that since business people felt threatened by the demagogic appeal of Communism, whereas they weren't particularly offended by Hitler or Mussolini, the U.S. responded at a more appropriate time to the attempts by totalitarian Communism to expand, the way France and Britain responded to Nazism in World War II. It had, as it were, permission not to be isolationist by the same forces responsible for the Red Scare of the Twenties. Didn't change the fact that Stalin ran gulags just as Hitler ran concentration camps: even a stopped clock is right twice a day, useless though it is for telling time. John Savard

A "stopped clock" signifies *nothing* except a "stopped clock". It has *no* more relation to time than the kitchen table. A clock has to "keep" time in order to give any indication related to what time it is. This "stopped clock" telling the right time idea... is just so *bogus*!!! I've read that the country was solidly behind the Korean war when it began. However, after a few years, the country began to wonder what was going on and what we were doing there. Truman's popularity really sank. McCullough's book on Truman goes into a lot of this.

I was 5 years old at the time. We were fighting for keeps in WWII. Korea was a much smaller police action where we had to restrain ourselves. -- Dan Espen
