I see that has the phases of the moon. (but I use the 'pom' program anyway) -- Using UNIX since v6 (1975)... Use the BIG mirror service in the UK: http://www.mirrorservice.org

I was at the Grand Canyon yesterday. It was depressing how many people were ignoring the canyon and either peering at their phones or jamming huge numbers of calories into their morbidly obese faces.

In late 1999, I was asking people:
1. How many days to Y2K?
2. What's the present phase of the moon?
The responses were amusing. No one who understood what 1. meant
could answer 2. Almost no one could answer 2. and this is a rural
community.
SWMBO is convinced that making sauerkraut only works under a waxing
moon. I've seen her go through all the right moves and have it not
work as expected under a waning moon.

Greymaus <mausg@mail.com> writes: > How would you know when sauerkraut goes wrong?. :)))) You make sauerkraut by putting a layer of shredded cabbage into a jar, tub, crock, sturdy container, sprinkling with salt and tamping/ramming a whole lot with a wooden tamper. Repeat with with more cabbage and salt. By the time the container is half full, water drawn out of the cabbage nearly covers it. By the time the container is full, the tamped cabbage is completely under juice/water. Then you weight the cabbage down with a waterproof weight (glass, igneous rock) to keep it under its juice and put it away to ferment. You *never* *add* water. When it's "not working", the juice fails to rise. When the container is full of cabbage, the juice only come up 1/3 or 1/2 the way. That's how you know it's gone wrong. If you put it away like that, it doesn't ferment, goes all mouldy and become compost/hog slops. Waxing moon draws up water? Rays? Gravity? Levity? Whatever. I know, I know. I have a degree in biochemistry so yeah, I know. It's still POM-dependent. -- Mike Spencer Nova Scotia, Canada

Why are there seven days in a week? Because of the phases of the moon isn't it? After some googling I find contrary answers (and some non-answers, like the week days are named after 7 planetry bodies, but why 7?) One page I found says that the 7 day week is pagen.

One thing I wonder about is how good my memory is. I don't have many memories from before that, so some of them may be garbled. Perhaps I'm mixing up the location of those Garbage Gobblers, or maybe my father called them that when they weren't specified as such. I couldn't read, so I'd have to rely on the accuracy of what I was told. We were in Oregon later that trip, and in Winnipeg for one of the few times I met his parents, so we probably were in BC, though I have no memory of it. So I may have shifted where I saw those garbage gobblers. > Another thing I remember from long road trips as a child was that > occasionally you'd pass through an area where the trees had been > wiped out by a fire, and beside the road would be a large gibbet > with an oversized cigarette hanging from it.
