Okay. I haven't figured out how to employ the twm variable that
shouls fix it:

    ForceIcons
        This variable indicates that icon pixmaps specified in the
        Icons variable should override any client-supplied pixmaps.

or locate what twm uses for its default pixmap -- plain rectangle with
window name in it. We're coming up on cold rain and mud season so
I'll soon get back to trying to muddle this out.

I rarely use the Icon manager; it's posible to end up with an icon
completely off the screen/viewport/desktop and then the Icon manager
is the the only way to get back to the associated window.

I believe this takes a list of window names to which it applies.

The problem is figuring out the window name for the application you
wish to override.

I think Icons are useless, myself, so I use the IconManager (which
provides a simple text button for each window). Click once to Iconify,
click a second time to uniconify.

In fvwm you can match using the X name, class or resource.
The module FvwmIdent will tell you the name class or resource
for any window.

Lacking that, try xwininfo.

So, you have icons, they're just captured in a box.
Well, they're not quite icons, because they stay in the box even
when the window is not minimized.
For me, that's useless because I use key bindings to minimize windows.
Fvwm allows you to define one or more areas of the screen
to use as invisible boxes (IconBoxes).
Mine run down the right (under the clock, perfmeter, and mail indicator.
When that fills, they run across the bottom starting on the right.
(The main box almost never fills.)

Actually, no, I don't have any icons. All that is in the
box is a set of label widgets with text (the window name) labels.

Considering that of the 45 or so open windows on my dual-head
setup, 30 are xterm windows, using a graphical icon would be
silly.

In Fvwm, icons have images and labels by default.
You can turn off the label or you can turn off the image.
Hence, I tend to think of icons as just something somewhere
that represents a window.

That's a lot of windows.

$ uptime
 10:22:13 up 74 days, 21:37, 431 users,  load average: 2.10, 1.87, 1.73

I have a root window, a half-dozen xpdf windows (processor specs,
hardware reference manuals, design documents), two xterms per active
source tree (with four distinct branches in use for various reasons), one
for linux source, one for firmware source, one for a third-party
test-suite source, a couple ssh sessions to other hosts and a couple of gvim windows.

that is around 15 times as many as I have on my ditto server, with around
the same setup as below. You either have killed the X server without
having it die completely a few times, have lots of guests from the net,
or you have a LOT more running than what you describe below.

Actually, I pulled that accidentally from an (east coast) shared host, which really
does have that many users on it.

My host is:

$ uptime
 08:45:55 up 231 days, 17:45, 33 users,  load average: 0.00, 0.05, 0.10

Much more reasonable.

I attribute my relative lack of open windows to using Emacs.
No need to switch from an edit window to a compile window to a test
window.

But I _want_ to see them all at the same time, I don't want to have to switch
between them. That's why i have 3840x1200 pixels available across
two screens.

VIM now has most of the capabilities of Emacs, but I don't _want_
everything in one window.

I go on the theory that I can only look at one thing at a time.
Right now I'm at a single 1600x1200 monitor.
If I had 2, I'm not sure what direction I'd go.

For a while I operated a laptop and the 1600x1200 side by side.
I found it way too distracting hunting down windows
and shifting them around.

> VIM now has most of the capabilities of Emacs, but I don't _want_
> everything in one window.

Yes, I've noticed how vim gets more and more powerful.
Even has a way to navigate to the lines that are in error in a compile.
Not sure that it's at the same level as Emacs though.

In Emacs I can find an error, correct it by adding or deleting lines
and Emacs still knows where the next line in error is.
Not sure if it prompts for a save before compile either.

I see vim has horizontal and vertical splits too,
How they retain such fast start up is a mystery though.

Can't you create your own? 30 variations of the xterm default would be
a challenge but I'm sure it's possible.

Because I don't find graphical Icons at all useful. Take up way
too much screen real-estate and would usually be covered by open
windows anyway.

The creation must need be dynamic anyway, since the name of a window
changes throughout its life based on the activity being performed
in the window:

function Banner {
                        print "\033]$1;$2\007\c"
        }

function buildmaster
{
        Banner 1 buildmaster
        ssh -Y buildmaster
        Banner 1 $(uname -n)
}

function dvmm
{
 ...
        cd ${_path}${1}/${_branch}/src
        Banner 1 dvmm_${1}
        break
 ...
}

Of course. That doesn't change the fact that you could run remote X
application and display it in Wayland....

Wait and see. I grokked that as I can't imagine any other reason to
switch to it. Is it any other?

Nothing prevents you from creating a graphics server (X11 or some other)
on top of Wayland.

The X Protocol is too low-level to work efficiently over the network.
How about having a Qt server:

     My PC                                 Remote PC
   +---------------+                     +------------+
   | +-----------+ |      Qt Protocol    | +--------+ |
   | | Qt Server |<----------------------->| Qt App | |
   | +-----+-----+ |                     | +--------+ |
   |       |       |                     +------------+
   |       V       |
   | +-----------+ |
   | |  Wayland  | |
   | +-----------+ |
   +---------------+

Unfortunately, I don't think that's how it's going to be done.
