Just build from source.

Here is the Slackbuilds script for grpn for Slackware:

I've frankly better things to do with my time at this stage of life.

The 'involvement' is the sum total of:

  1) download the source (which you have to download a 'package'
anyway, so this is somewhat of a wash)

  2) unpack the source (it is a gzipped tar - but the package manager
also has to unpack the package, so this time is somewhat of a
     wash)

  3) type "make"

The time to build on an i7 cpu is 3.289s.

When "make" finishes, you have a grpn binary that runs just fine.

Believe that I understand how to download and build software. I've
been doing it since comp.sources.unix and before that from SHARE, DECUS,
CUBE and FSF tapes.

That said, I have better things to do that spend the 20 minutes or so
required to build a package I've no need for and no intention of using.

Translation: you don't want to build from source not due to a lack of
time to do so, but because you simply won't use the calculator. Fair
enough, just be up front about it. Say: "I've no intention of using
it anyway, so no thanks".

Did you overlook the build time above? 3.289 seconds? Even including
time to search for the home page, download, and unpack, unless one is
on dialup and still running an i386 at 33mhz, there's no way grpn takes
20 minutes to build.

The especially sweet irony however is that you've wasted more time here
on usenet arguing how you don't have time to build from source than it
would have taken to build from source.

Someone along the line snipped text here, which was "all Linux"

And here, I simply pointed out that it wasn't _all_ linux.

Of course, when I build from source, I build RPM's so I can track the
install, install on the dozen other systems running here[*], and maintain
the package over the long run.

Takes much longer than 3 seconds, as I would need to generate and test
the spec file.

[*] Four internal VM's, two external facing VM's, three laptops and
three workstations; all of which are in regular use.

And note, the soi disant "argument" you mention cost me about a minute
and a half.

The general argument that XXX is ultraconvenient because it
takes only YYY minutes to compile/install is valid, but (as
the above situation illustrates) to argue from this that
Usenet participant ZZZ should find it convenient is a little
tricky at best.

Indeed, it need not be a person managing a brazillion hosts
that begs to be excused from a particular trivial exercise.
It can be (as just one example) someone who's retired, wants
to get as much done as possible before he dies, and
considers the cost of the context shift to do this trivial
thing to be too high.

I downloaded the source and built it in under a minute.

The 12" slide rule I got in a bunch of junk has a leather or
pseudo-leather "holster", but it's worn out at the bottom, so if I wear
it like a sword, I risk losing it.

I think I'd rather have a pocket analog computer.

Mine doesn't have a belt loop. The leather holster is in good shape.

I still have trouble with infix calculators, which seem to be

Any posix shell will support $(( )) which allows arbitrary C-style
expression evaluation.

e.g.

 ksh$ printf "%u\n" $(( 0x87530000000 | (1 << 20) | (0 << 15) | (1 << 12) | 0x114 ))

I thought there were even some calculators that could switch between
either mode.

The real problem is that while a calculator with way more functions than
the HP-35 can be had for about ten dollars, but if you want RPN the
selection is more limited, and costs a lot more.

I have an HP-35 but it has been in storage ever since the battery gave up so
I can't look at it. But, from memory, the only added math function is
factorial. There is a lot of statistical stuff, which I never use, on my
TI-30Xa, which is what I normally use. I also have the early HP financial
calculator and it's functional but it has no trig functions and so it's
pretty useless to me.

I wrote an RPN calculator for the Atari ST but I got rid of all of those a
few years ago, it was a fun program to write. I wonder if RPN would have
fared better if it didn't have an off-putting name? Reverse and negation
are off-putting words in my mind, Polish sounds like it might be a joke.

Oops, I see my TI-30 has a key labeled 'HYP' so that sounds like added math,
too.

The HYP key gives you access to the hyperbolic trig functions.

I was noting the similarity between reverse and negation, since reverse is
not a common trigger word for me. I meant no involvement of the N in RPN.
People often use negation when trying to say something without actually
saying it. Made up example: "The NEXT computer was not without its
successes." I have to sit and fuss with it to see what the guy is trying to
say. So I was trying to point out the similarity between reveres and
negation. I hadn't noticed the leading 'N', it was just coincidental..

The calculator was nice because it was dead easy for me to add new
functions; of course that didn't help anyone else.
