That is standard European mains voltage. They may have just fitted the
(first) coaches with off the shelf lights.

When the car I used to own was built, in 1953, it used 110 VAC for the Fluorescent lights. A year ago, on a visit to Scotland, several of the trains we rode on had power outlets at each pair of seats. They were the UK-standard 240V outlets; I had an adapter so my charger's plug would fit, and it worked just fine (as it did with any other 240V outlet over there). Some of the trains had wifi too; I was able to keep up with a.f.c. :-) About a month ago I did a 6-hour trip on a Greyhound. Power supplies that can take a wide range of voltages are relatively new. I can remember when they were introduced for electric shavers.

Many switchmode power supplies will take a DC input voltage and switch it to the correct output voltage as long as the DC input voltage is high enough. In some, it only needs to be a few volts above the rated output voltage. It's an undocumented feature, so don't rely on it. Not for the generator per se, but a commercial power station is designed with pretty narrow limits for the speed at which it operates. Hydropower plants have a constant water pressure, but generate different loads, so the turbine should go almost exactly identically fast. Same with steam turbines, although they have varying pressure. -- mrr

They need the ability to vary it slightly to resync when they restart and reconnect after downtime. I suspect generators used in 50Hz countries could handle 60Hz or vice versa; it's just not that significant a difference. We're not talking about 16.7Hz, 25Hz or 400Hz, all which I'd expect to have problems related to having too few/too many poles and such. Most power-related stuff I've looked into has wide tolerances around the nominal figures, often 25-50%. Older ones had synchronous motors, guaranteeing that their time is as exact as the frequency they're fed (which is pretty accurate). That's because it just rectifies the power anyway--probably after chopping it into high-frequency AC so the transformer can be smaller. Apparently, ERCOT takes it to the extreme that if they run a bit slow (e.g. hot days), they'll run it a little fast later (e.g. night) so there is zero net loss of cycles; except for leap seconds, a clock with a synchronous motor will be _perfectly_ accurate over _decades_. They proposed ending that practice a while back, but when it came out that clocks might lose 1-2 minutes/year, public outrage forced them to back down. In the midst of the cold war the Pasvik river on the border between Russia(USSR) and Norway was deployed with some rather large hydropower stations. They were connected to the Soviet grid, and the Norwegian grid didn't reach that far east yet. So the population in Eastern Finnmark had the grid frequency regulated from Moscow. Which made some jokes about being a NATO member, but taking something as basic as time uncritically from the Ruskies. Most cheap electric clocks (including those in appliances, where they're mostly an afterthought) do not seem to be sync to the AC power-line frequency anymore. I've seen several lately that are powered from a generic 5VDC external power supply, so there's no possibility of getting the AC line frequency into the device. Still, why should they need a crystal at all? Mains power is plenty accurate enough (heck, better than the crystal they're using) as a frequency source, but they're throwing that away in the rectifier! Yes, a unit targeted at international markets would need a switch to select 50/60Hz, but large appliances are country-specific anyway. For instance, my oven doesn't offer 12/24h or °F/°C display; it's US-only, so it'd be just fine to assume 60Hz power. It was last set on 3-13-11 and this morning it is running 6 seconds fast per one of the UTC services. The greatest error I ever saw on it was 11 s slow one time, back when I used to reset it for the standard/daylight switch. I have been tracking this watch since 1995 when I just happened to notice it was better than average at keeping time. It cost me 10¢ at a garage sale. Of course it is kept at room temperature all the time, which gives it an advantage over something like an old fashioned ship's chronometer. I can remember fussing with a jeweler's loupe to adjust a Bulova wrist watch to get it under a minute a month error, IIRC that was my target. I spent a year or two, adjusting it every few weeks until I decided it just wasn't going to get any better.
