electrons. Move a coulomb per second of electrons [in the reverse
direction!] and you have a current of one ampere. If you put a
coulomb of charge into a capacitor and the resulting voltage is
one volt, then the capacitance was one farad.

I know I came across the coulomb at some point, but it was _much_ later than when I learned about volts, ohms, amperes, watts and even farads. Consider a 6-volt battery capable of putting out one ampere for an hour (6 amp-hours, easily available off the shelf). A capacitor capable of doing that would be 3600 farads. The idea of having a capacitor in parallell with the starter battery is not that far out. Some of the larger trucks have this thing retrofitted, using a supercap of 8 farads or thereabout on a 24V battery. It helps grinding the starter engine the first 2-3 rotations to get the full compression on the diesel engine, and they are popular in winter conditions. You just need that 500ms boost to get the diesel started. -- mrr

That must have led to some interesting problems on the starter solenoid. As I understand it there was an 8 farad capacitor charged up to 24 volts? So they had an infinite inrush current for a little bit? I use infinite loosely, of course, because of the practical nature of the wiring. I recall a 300 A filament transformer, the secondary winding was a copper buss bar about 3/8" x 1-1/4".

The mechaism of energy storage in capacitance is *nothing at all like* the e nergy storage in a chemical battery. (One is an electric field, the other is ionic movement). There are applications where the *actual* capacitance of a battery, is a factor (source impedance versus frequency leaping into my mind), and measurements show it on the order of a few hundred millifarads.

That makes sense logically (and I probably did learn that at one point in the past), but I just can't mentally grasp that quantity. I have a better sense of what an ampere is, probably since that is something I encounter on a daily basis. Not so much for a farad, but an amp-second is easier for me to grasp than a coulomb-volt. I see batteries specified in (milli)amp-hours; I suppose farads would be more correct, but since I'm using the batteries to power something rated in (milli)amps and what I care about is how many hours the battery will last, the former is more useful in practice. This is probably why power bills are in kilowatt-hours rather than joules, too.
