It's quite interesting to look at the number of constituents vs. the number of constituents registered to vote vs. the number of constuents that _did_ vote vs. the number of constiuents that voted for the winner. In an off-year, the final number may be 5% of the first number.

Securitized mortgages had been used during the S&L crisis to obfuscate
fraudulent mortgages (posterchild were office bldgs in Dallas/Ft.Worth
area that turned out to be empty lots). In the late 90s, I was asked to
look at improving the integrity of supporting documents as
countermeasures. Then loan originators were securitizing loans&mortgages
and paying for triple-A ratings (when both the sellers and the rating
agencies knew they weren't worth triple-A, from Oct2008 congressional
testimony). Triple-A rating trumps supporting documentation and they can
start doing no-documentation liar loans. Being able to pay for triple-A
eliminated any reason for loan originators to care about borrowers'
qualifications or loan quality, they could sell off (all loans as fast
as they could be made) to customers restricted to dealing in "safe"
investments (like large pension funds, claim is it accounts for 30% loss
in funds and trillions shortfall for pensions), largely enabling being
able to do over $27T 2001-2008

loans/mortgages designed to fail, pay for triple-A, sell to their victim

In the wake of ENRON, congress passes Sarbanes-Oxley claiming that it
would prevent future ENRONs and guarantee that executives and auditors
responsible for fraudulent financial filings, do jail time. however it
requires SEC to do something. Possibly because even GAO doesn't believe
SEC is doing anything, it starts doing reports of fraudulent financial
filings, even showing uptic after Sarbanes-Oxley goes into effect (and
nobody doing jailtime). Less well known, SOX also has provision for SEC
to do something about rating agencies (played the pivotal role in the

The problem with that line is that neither Canada nor Australia
was ever actually stupid enough to have anything like Glass-Steagall
and both have much bigger banks per capita than the US and yet
not one of the retail banks imploded spectacularly or even needed
to be bailed out by government.

And that has been true in the US too. There were lots of
full depressions in the century before 1929 and just one
very severe recession since then. And this time the govt
response came much more quickly when the financial
system imploded and unemployment only got into
double digits for a couple of quarters and then headed
back down again, unlike the 30s where it lasted for much
of the 30s.

I am not convinced they have stopped printing money. Short term interest
rates have effectively been zero for seven years. The usage of money used
to have value, now its value is zero. Other things still have value:wheat,
lumber, cement, textiles. Short term money is the only thing that has no
value. One way to have this happen would be if the supply suddenly became
unlimited. I am open to other theories.

Fiat money is amazingly resilient. I would have expected inflation to
take a good hold a decade ago. Yes, they are hiding it; but all the real
indicators say it is 3-4% above what the consumer price indicators do;
i.e. ~5% inflation; which is pretty normal in the western world.
This means we have negative interest.
All the moneyed people have more or less abandoned cash for their larger
settlements, it appears they are setting either in some CME multi-raw-materials
indices or in QQQQ's from NYSE (these are a proper index of the largest
30(?) companies listed on that exchange. Which will both give good
inflation protection.
The only two things the fiat money have for it is that has a monopoly
to quote prices and to pay taxes, fines etc.
All the other stuff can be done in other currencies.

This is a tool, and tools are not inherently good or bad. It is their usage that takes on goodness or badness. But we should be very clear that almost all the world's currencies are pure fiat currencies. This makes for a clearer analysis of their advantages or their risks and drawbacks. Fiat currencies have the risk of instant debasement of the currency built in. It is all about trust, and that can evaporate in an instant. Like it has happened in e.g. Germany, Argentina, Hungary where the currencies went from reasonable stability to total hyperinflation within a few months. The US is well beyond the fundamental GDP/debt levels of these countries where this happened now. But it has one factor which is unique; it is the world's reserve currency. In the US you must use the dollar for three things. You must pay your taxes with it, you must quote values in all contracts in it to have them enforcable by courts, and you must accept to settle any debts in it. Other from those three you can have your holdings in other stuff that is not directly affected by a sudden debasement of the currency. If you fix the price of the raw material and supply or technology changes the cost of the raw material something has to give. If you then adjust the value of the raw material, you end up with the same "fiat" nature in the currency. -- Dan Espen

I don't pretend to understand all the implications of what he said and it doesn't leap out at me as a good idea. But it certainly *isn't* similar to fiat currency. You don't change the amount of wheat at the flick of a pen. As I understand it, he is simply reminding us occasionally of the fundamental nature of currency, a harmless non-emotional adjective.

Actually, "fiat" is not a non-emotional adjective. It has a meaning, and thus is a highly pejorative thing to say of a currency. It means that those pieces of paper are only supposed to be money because someone said so. And history has shown that even rulers with great coercive power at their disposal have been frustrated in their plans by the realities of economics. John Savard
