On the other hand, older people are bigger consumers of medical care and foor, which are underweighted (actually as I said they don't count food at all). I'm going to start collecting my benefits when I turn 70 this year. All my RW friends assured me I was crazy, I was never going to get anything because the whole system would collapse. (Sorry, but that's the way I see it.) 4. Continue to deficit spend. How long does deficit spending have to go on before we realize that the feds can do whatever they want. It's called fiat money for a reason. Call me clueless. A little tax increase on the well to do wouldn't hurt, but it's not really necessary. A little benefit cut wouldn't hurt much either. Meanwhile, we need to reorganize our SSI and "welfare" systems to put more people to work for cultural reasons. -- Dan Espen

The US has been very fortunate in having the senior currency, that everyone wants to have when the times are bad. The world therefore lends somewhere in the order of $8T to the US, more or less interest free. The FEDs stopped publishing statistics of this nearly a decade ago (M3 stats, and split domestic/foreign). It was then at ~$3T and rising. This has had the effect of holding down inflation in the US a lot. If all of this falls due; and theoretically it can all be due within a month; then the US will have a currency depreciation of around 50%, which will instantly fuel inflation to well beyond the Carter figures. But ironically, the more likely such a scenario is the more the rest of the world holds on to the dollar. -- mrr

We also have a huge group of people who are unable to hold down a job requiring any kind of skill--these people once were laborers, maids, factory assembly line workers; and most of those jobs are gone. It is repugnant to our way of thinking, but we are probably going to need compulsory work camps set up in the future to do something with those people. Just leaving them rot away in city and rural slums, comitting high amounts of crime and destruction, costing enormous sums of money, is just not sustainable.

I agree completely and work camps is exactly what I have in mind. We just can't let people fall through the cracks and wander the streets. Last night PBS talked about how the suicide rate for 45-54 whites in the US is climbing. Mostly, out of work. We should not allow people to be out of work. Society can't work that way. -- Dan Espen

Well, FWIW, they say the Civilian Conservation Corps worked well in the Depression--sending kids out to the forests. I think the kids who participated gave it a positive rating. Maybe we need that.

You cannot threaten the working poor and middle class without a pernicious threat of dire iniquity if there is no example of what happens when you fight the corrupt system. Homelessness will persist and increase, if only because it is a convenient place to park political undesireables who cannot be imprisoned on trumped up charges. Never mind the masses of ignorant and unemployable parasites who are nevertheless employed maintaining the welfare sysstem and attending to the needs of the homeless -- all without doing anything which might threaten their jobs. -- We all cannot be intelligent, but at least we can all be polite.

Instead, just close the borders to imports from China, and build factories to employ those people to make the things in America that used to be bought from China. Of course, that will be a large redistribution of income; the rich will find their toys have gotten more expensive. But that is in line with having a democratic nation, whereas the other is not.
