But for every TV and movie Star Trek until her death (excepting the original TV Star Trek, where she played Nurse Chappell), *she* was the voice of the computer. Even when she had a regular acting role in Star Trek: TNG, she also did the computer voice. I can't imagine that Barrett had money problems with this steady income. ISTM that she may even have collect "residuals" every time a Star Trek episode was televised. -- numerist at aquaporin4 dot com

Heck, Angela Landsbury is doing Broadway, and Betty White is all over the place, and they're in their 90s. There's an old actor, George Segal, with a long list of major project credits. Yet he's still working full time on a TV show (me, I'd rather retire and relax). Robert Duvall, Al Pacino, and James Caan are all working. (Maybe the olive oil business didn't pay as well as we thought.)

One of by favourite double-bass players, Coleridge Goode, died recently a few weeks short of his 101st birthday - he was still playing down in his local pub until his late 90s. I would guess it was from the 1970's by the way the men were dressed, at the same time. So something like a 50 year spread. She was prettier 50 years ago. And taller.

He may have met Leonard Nimoy that way, who was a character actor on a lot of TV shows. There was one Sea Hunt where Nimoy played a diver sickened by underwater chemical leakage. Let's just say it was good practice for Amok Time. The sexism in those 1950s TV shows is startling by today's standards. Most of the time the women were just terrified and utterly helpless, and needed the men to protect them and calm them day. But there were a few times when it was women who were the thieves and ringleaders. On one episode of Highway Patrol, two women dressed up as men and did hold-ups. Initially the cops assumed it was two guys, so the women were able to evade the police roadblocks. But then Broderick Crawford discovered an eyebrow pencil and got suspicious. (It seemed in almost every episode of Highway Patrol they set up roadblocks on key roads to trap the fugitives. I can't imagine doing that today in California traffic--the gridlock would be enormous. I also wonder what the rural scenes shown look like today--they're probably shopping centers instead of farms.)

There was one T intersection used repeatedly. But sometimes they showed a small town, and it appeared that different scenes were used in different episodes. It was said they filmed pretty far out to avoid disrupting traffic, so maybe the areas still aren't too developed.

But "Highway Patrol" had that wonderful narrator Art Gilmore!!! He was famous for his narrations of TV shows. He also had acting parts on "Adam-12" (Lt. Moore in 15 episodes) and in the late "Dragnet 1967-1970" (Capt. Mert Howe in 14 episodes) and in the 1950's version of "Dragnet" (Capt. Harry Didion in 12 episodes). Gilmore passed away in 2010 at the age of 98. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0319497/reference -- numerist at aquaporin4 dot com

In the Wikip piece on H/P, I was saddened to read that (1) the once cozy relations between the producers and the real Calif H/P got strained, and (2) Broderick Crawford was drinking a lot, interfering with production. Crawford played himself in a cameo in a 1970s movie; he was looking for free booze and to get laid (his words). H/P and Sea Hunt are aired early in the morning on ThisTV. I could swear that the theme music has changed somewhat since I watched it before years ago. Maybe there wre copyright issues with the music (sometimes that happens).

He also had a minor part in a Twilight Zone episode "Quality of Mercy" with Albert Salmi and Dean Stockwell. If you see the "cut-down" version of "Quality of Mercy" on broadcast (or cable) TV, you may miss Nimoy. -- numerist at aquaporin4 dot com

I was convinced the navy was a lot safer place to be, but The thought of wearing that silly little boy uniform totally turned me off. I took my chances with the draft and lucked out. We draftees were well aware that it was much better to have RA in your serial number than US.

I can't remember what arm that was related to, but he ended up in the navy, specifically in a submarine, the USS Drum. I'm not sure how safe an option that was, those submarines seemed dangerous even without anyone shooting at them. Michael

Unless you were in small patrol boats in Vietnam, but were those actually Army boats? It's not like the Vietnamese had much in the way of destroyers or aircraft carriers. UNless it was the Gulf of Tonkin incident, or the USS Pueblo, the spy ship captured by the North Koreans 1968. I did know someone who'd been in the navy I think towards the end of the war because I didn't think he was that much older than me. >> People went to Sweden. Some professional criminals can be very patriotic. But during WWII, various war resisters organized campaigns to desegregate the dining halls. And Joan Baez says her husband David Harris was organizing something in the late sixties in prison, but of course there might have been a decent number of war resisters there, and certainly with the drug laws, there might have been sympathic people in for drugs. SOmeone I knew got arrested for parachuting into the construction site of a nuclear power plant, a Greenpeace action. He ended up with the "regular" prisoners rather than the others doing the civil disobedience. And he later said he got some nagging about waiting to get arrested. But that also sounds so stereotypical that he might have been telling a joke. It does seem like in the Gulag system in the USSR, the criminal prisoners would really look down and take advantage of the political prisoners. Michael

But hurricane at sea, hang fire in the gun mount, etc. it was still dangerous. The ship I was stationed on had just come back from providing gun fire support off the coast of Viet Nam.
