Besides being wrong and offensive (to application programmers),
your use of the word sanitize is nonsense:
Verb 1. sanitise - make sanitary by cleaning or sterilizing.
2. sanitise - make less offensive or more acceptable by
removing objectionable features
You're sure doing a great job of proving you are not a troll.

They had someone visiting Ireland to call me about how business works here. Besides being retired, I had no problem with that, there are spare rooms. Then they wanted details of my `Stamp' Wots a stamp?.. I asked. In france, it turned out, everyday business is dominated by paperwork, and people get a thing called a stamp, a rubber stamp, which has their name, business address, national insurance number, and all, this can fill a place on forms in one stroke.. And what is the French word for this ?. "Tampon" There is a joke in there somewhere. The person arrived last February, it was raining when he arrived, rained constantly for three days, he had an asthma (sp?) attack and went home. Some of these details are fuzzy. -- greymaus.ireland.ie . . ...

To my way of thinking, even if you never use it outside the classroom, it's helfpul to have it rattling around inside your head--you never quite forget that underneath the expert systems and high level abstractions and pretty interfaces, it's still just a machine doing basic arithmetic and simple comparisons at a horrendous rate of speed. It also gives a feel for what's fast and what's slow. While optimizing compilers and the like can do a lot, there are limits to the degree of programmer dunderheadness they can fix.

It isn't about being able or unable to write complex systems. It's more a matter of their being efficient vs inefficient. Things like "don't put a file open in the inner loop if you can open the file once at the beginning instead". The code works either way, but it has a lot of unnecessary overhead one way that it doesn't the other.

Another good reason is to cram code into a really tiny system, though that one seems to be disappearing quite fast when you consider what you can get done with a PicAXE and compiled BASIC. -- martin@ | Martin Gregorie gregorie. | Essex, UK org |

Really there is no need for assembler unless the language you are using doesn't have the right constructs to access the hardware explicitly. So the lowest bit of library code like char port(char *portno); // reads I/O port and returns its value has to be coded in a couple of lines of assembler... There's a bit more in terms of interrupts and the like, but really, once you have written your 256 bytes of assembler, and have a C or other compiler, there is no need to pick up that assembler ever again. On some simple chips of course it does give predictable timings, but not with modern cached and pipelined code. -- You can get much farther with a kind word and a gun than you can with a kind word alone. A bit more than 256 bytes, but still not much. If I worked at it I could probably convert more assembler to PL/I, but at a certain point it's just easier to code the assembler. -- Pete

Another reason to know assembler is to be able to identify a compiler bug which is generating the wrong machine instructions. /BAH

Do you? That method gives you consistency which can be more important than correctness. If you encounter a bug in the compiler but cannot get that bug fixed, you need to be able to implement a workaround which will work even if the compiler bug is fixed. I don't see how you can ensure your code will work without knowing machine language. Using another compiler may solve the problem but then your product is tied to a particular implmentation of the language. I don't see how you can ensure that the "users" of the program you are writing will use a particular rendition of the language. I'd be very nervous not knowing what machine code was generated. But I am an auld fart who hasn't done any real work in computers for decades. /BAH

But try working that trick with e.g. Javascript bugs. I had an issue that IE6 and Firefix did different things when evaluating stuff inside a conditional. One cast to char*, the other to int...when there was a number involved. And no the Javascsript specification doesn't cover the exact case I found. > > I'd be very nervous not knowing what machine code was generated. > But I am an auld fart who hasn't done any real work in computers > for decades. > Well I used to marvel at what the gcc compiler turned out - better assembler than I could write myself usually.
