In the early years of the war, it was relatively easy to get a college deferment and then there were many jobs that had an occupational deferment. Draft pressures resulted in changing that situation, but by then the war had wound down and draft calls were relatively low.

There's nothing wrong with that position, apart from the prevalance of people not holding it. I would consider it a reasonable long term aim to eliminate starvation, preventable disease and war globally - and no I don't think it's achievable any time soon but the reasons are political not technical and that makes me sad. Unfortunately, during the Vietnam war era, the protest movement was very beneficial to the communists, as they felt--correctly--that US resolve for the war was weak, and they could stick it out until the US got tired. Given all the other issues, I'm not sure if that made a critical difference, but the protest movement didn't help things at all. It led to a lot of rift in society. My objection--back then and now--was that the protesters were misguided and ignorant of the issues. Certainly, the government utterly failed to make a case for continued prosecution of the war. I think the first Iraq War--to get Iraq out of Kuwait, was justified and successful.
