Communist propaganda referred to the Vietnam war as a war of "national liberation", but that was complete nonsense. Unfortunately, there was misconduct by some U.S. troops in Vietnam that added to the problems faced by the ordinary Vietnamese peasant - and which distracted many from the utterly inhuman nature of Viet Cong aggression. Had the United States remained true to its ideals, and fought the Vietnam war as though the ordinary people of Vietnam could vote in American elections - which is the only right way to do it, since "whatsoever you do unto the least of My brethren, this you do unto Me" - then continued freedom for the people of South Vietnam, at least, as in Korea, could have been achieved, if not true victory (the unconditional surrender of the aggressor regime in the North). I don't see how anyone could fight without the security of knowing the other soldiers would watch your back. Instead of replacing a unit, the US military replaced a person. There were a lot of southerners that fled to the north and then came back to fight. Still had the corrupt government in the south and the invader from thousands of miles away. -- Dan Espen

Actually, it's really hard to say the war was right or wrong, knowing what we know now. On the one hand, the North Vietnam WAS a cruel dictatorship out to conquer the South to impose control on it. After they won, they did execute thousands of "enemies of the state", and later on, conditions were so horrible that thousands of people risked their lives as the "boat people". So, trying to save South Vietnam was indeed a legitimate humanitarian effort. I don't think the protesters understood this. However, on the other hand, the U.S. prosecution of the war was totally and utterly incompetent from day one to the last day. It was bad at the highest level--JFK, LBJ, and RN--and bad at the combat level. It appears that Gen. Paul Harkins should've been tried for treason. Maybe Maxwell Taylor, too. Also, McNamara. One big problem was the U.S. was supporting the South Vietnamese government, which was no damn good. Yet the U.S. leaders sucked up to the corrupt and incompetent officials, and failed to report to Washington its shortcomings, indeed, repeatedly lied about it. So, eventually they got rid of Diem, but failed to replace him with someone better. Another big problem was the overall prosecution of the war. It was terrible and counter-productive. By 1965, it should've been totally obvious to the leaders of the Johnson Administration that past war plans were utter failures and a new approach was required. But nothing better was developed.
