I've seen it.
In the right circumstance visibility drops to nothing.
Wipers clear it though.
I've also had the interior fog up but high fan, defrost,
clears that in a minute or so.

From looking at the satellite image, it appears that the water
gets shallower suddenly (although this might be a map artefact). I
wonder if that is connected. Maybe, the water around holds less
warmth so the air is colder, holds less moisture and a surface sets
off condensation? A guess.

Sincerely,

The river is tidal below the bridge and sometimes a bit above. When
the tide is out and the river high, it goes from maybe 3' deep to very
shallow over a few hundred yards.

It's really the other way around. As air cools, it can hold
less water vapor, so it condenses out. A windshield that is
colder than the ambient air temperature will cause the water vapor
to condense on the windshield (and often freeze, as I found
on Wednesday morning :-(.

Once upon a time, cars with manual transmissions allowed one to light
the brake lights without engagin the brakes. I used that feature a lot
in Mass. I would like to have a button which flashes the brake lights
now that the brake pedals have no cushion between turning the lights on
and engaging the brakes.

IIR the driverless cars would have anti-tailgating technology. I would
like to put it on a lot cars now.

Once upon a time? Both of my vehicles (2012 and 2016 model years, one
auto, one manual) still illuminate the brake lights when the pedal is
lightly depressed.

There was a second requirement: without engaing brakes.

Stupid requirement. The brakes aren't engaged enough to make
any difference to anything. They don’t even stop the wheels from
rotating so you don’t even skid in the most slippery conditions,
just waste a drop of gasoline at most.

On the other hand, seeing the tail end of your car bob a bit and start
coming towards you is much more effective than brake lights alone.
You do have to be ready to apply a quick shot of acceleration, though.

All cars still do. Just apply the brakes a little without changing
what you are doing with the accelerator does that, in any type
of transmission.

Don’t need one. Applying the brakes just enough to get the
lights on but not slowing the vehicle at all does that fine.

In fact they are more likely to drive a lot closer to the car in front
of them because they can react much more quickly than cars with
human drivers.

> I would like to put it on a lot cars now.

Not feasible, particularly when you have to get close
to the car in front because its stopping suddenly etc
and when pulling into a tight spot when overtaking etc.

Good point.

Actually, following too closely is a type of speeding. To put some
distance between you and the guy in front, you must slow down. The
problem is that nobody wants to slow down.

> But in this case, I have to admit that tougher enforcement would face a very

Cameras could catch some tailgaters who are ridiculously close.

I'm not sure anti-tailgating radar would help; I think it would be
too easily confused by traffic in adjacent lanes or on curves.

A few years ago they decided to get tough on drunk drivers, and began
very aggressive enforcement. They even set up checkpoints, just like
in old war movies "Where are your papers?!" Aside from civil liberties
concerns, the effort did work and drunk driving went down significantly.

They need to get tough on speeders, so that 65 means 65, and repeat
violators face serious consequences. Lots of drinkers got responsible
as a result of that tough enforcement, and lots of leadfoots would
slow down if they knew there was a high probability of punishment for
speeding.

Today, punishments for speeding are expensive, but the probability
of getting caught remains rather low. A lot of traffic courts
allow violators to plea bargain down to avoid getting charged points.

We do that continuously and you can get checked every week or so.
They check that you have a current license about half the time they
stop you too. And there are always megablitzes over Xmas and other
major public holidays where people are more likely to get pissed etc.

Victoria Australia does that and it doesn't make
any difference with the accident or fatality rate.

Yes, particularly when getting caught means that
you can't drive for a significant chunk of a year etc.

> and lots of leadfoots would slow down if they knew

We even take your car with the worst offences but
that doesn't make much difference to the worst of
the kids when the car is only worth less than $1K
etc. They just get another and drive unlicensed.

> Today, punishments for speeding are expensive, but

Doesn't need to be with the interstates and fixed speed cameras.

Doesn't happen here. In fact for a while even if
you could get the magistrate to not fine you
with a good story, you lose the points anyway.

Don't ask me how I know that.

The enforcement on this is far more aggressive here than the mere
speed.

This also goes for cutting into other lanes with too small an
opening, and doing so without signalling ahead.

They would rather see the traffic flowing even if everyone goes a
few km/h above the speed limit (up to 10); but will strike on
"blatant offenders".

Also, having inferior tires during winter is also stricken upon.

Drunk drivers are more or less under control here, but the medical and
dope ones are not.

We have had the fatality rate go down every year since 1978 except
2012 when there was a slight increase. Probably a fluke.

Accident rates had a slight climb 2000-2009 because of the redesign
towards roundabouts etc; that give slightly more, but a lot less
damaging accidents. Mostly fender dents; but they count as one.
The total number of "car unfit to drive to repair shop" accidents
have gone down by half since 1997, and fatalities ditto since sometime
in the late 1980s. Hospitalisations for more than three days have
also gone down by 2/3rds since the 1970s.

At 0.2 blood alcohol you will get a large fine and a few
months suspended license. At 0.5 you will get jail time and
will have your license confiscated, to be taken anew in 1-2
years.

It depends a lot on the road here, and the propability is
directly linked to the accident rates on the particular
road. Don'e even think of speeding in the long, deep undersea
tunnels we have, nor in the 5 "valley radials" out of Oslo.

How do you define more or less under control ?

> but the medical and dope ones are not.

We don’t have much of a problem with the medical ones, not clear why.

Dope is complicated and has just got a lot more complicated.
We have been testing for a few years now but have just recently
had someone claim that they tested positive for cannabis 9 days
after they last used it when clearly they would not have been
affected by the cannabis driving capability wise. Less clear if
he is lying or not. If he isnt, there is a massive problem. That
only happened days ago so it isnt clear what the outcome
will be. They must know how long you can stay positive for,
but its not clear if that person is biologically very unusual
or whether he's just a liar and the system doesn’t really
allow him to be carefully measure to check the real story.

Yeah, the entire modern first and second world has got that result.
Victoria has in fact had a slight increase in just the last couple of
years and its mostly pedestrians who have been killed in higher
numbers. Has been pretty dry too so it isnt just weather. Looks
like more pedestrians are walking around pissed and get run
over because they are talking on their phones etc a bit more.

> Accident rates had a slight climb 2000-2009 because of the

My town has always been into roundabouts and didn’t get
an increase in the accident rate when they were added at
one hell of a rate. That is a town of just 20K people tho.

Yeah, that is universal right thruout almost the entire modern
first and second world now, mainly due to cars which protect
the occupants much better than they used to with crumple
zone, air bags and to a lesser extent seat belts.

Our legal limit is 0.05 and you normally do get a loss of
license for a fair chunk of a year. 0 for P plate drivers, those
who have only had their license for a couple of years.

> At 0.5 you will get jail time

There is no automatic jail time here, you don’t even get that
quite a bit of the time even if you kill someone when drunk.
You have to be a flagrant repeat offender who kills someone
when drunk repeatedly for that to happen here.

> and will have your license confiscated,

Yeah, automatic loss of license here, on the spot.

Yeah, same here. Repeat offenders can end up with
disqualification periods of 5-10 or even 15 years but
you do have to outrageously flout the law to get that
and drive drunk unlicensed repeatedly.

Yeah, it’s the same here in Sydney proper. I did deliberately
flout the speed limit running very late into Sydney on the
Hume Highway well out of Sydney proper on that huge
great fully divided mega highway. Did see one of the cars
that does the automated booking parked in the very wide
median strip about half way in but by then the traffic
density had got up high enough so I wasn’t over the
limit by that much and didn’t get booked.

> I'll ask. How?

I was coming back from an airshow in a country town
150K away. Coming back in the early evening in summer,
Very long straight stretch that must have been 5K long,
no other traffic at all apart from the cop car coming in
the other direction so far way that I couldn’t even see him.
I was doing 160 in a 100Kmph speed limit area. The cop
wrote that up as 140, booked with the radar thing in the
cop car.

I fronted the magistrate in court, told a pack of lies, that
it was a new car that I hadn't driven outside town before,
driving into the sun, not other cars on the road except me,
very long straight stretch of country road, no danger at all.
The only lie was that I hadn't driven outside town before.
He let me off, just had to pay court costs. But in those days
the loss of points was automatic because I admitted that
I did exceed the speed limit. You don’t lose the points if the
magistrate lets you off now.

units issue -- Some countries use g/dL (US) where 0.03 would be "a
little tipsy" ... others use g/L (FR) where 0.3 would be the same
level. Others use mass/mass units (DE), (mg/g) where that exact same level
would be 0.28 ...

Yes, our 0.2 is equivalent to your 0,02. Different measurement;
around 1:9 in numeric value.

Wow, that is strict. Here DWI kicks in at .08, at least in NY and I think
that's the federal standard. OTOH I regularly hear of people picked up
blowing .16, .25, etc. Makes you wonder how they could even walk, much
less drive.

Yeah, but it basically means that you can't have a couple of beers,
one before dinner and one with dinner or a glass of wine with dinner.

> Here DWI kicks in at .08,

Ours is 0.05, but P platers who haven't been driving for long its 0.

That's what wiki says.

We do too, because its so outrageous.

It's actually quite a bit easy to drive very badly than to stagger around.
