Actually the European's killed more people for religious reasons than the Aztecs. Inquisition et al.. And it was much better to fall into Aztec hands than the Inquisition, which tortured people without mercy. Of course, there are other kinds of mechanic besides automobile mechanics... Ah. The first modern steam engine (excluding the ancient Greek aleolipile) was by Thomas Savery in 1698, Newcomen's more practical engine for pumping water out of mines was in 1712, and by 1776, James Watt's steam engine was in active use. So the reference to the profession of "mechanic" is not so anachronous as I had at first thought. Of course, they already had _millwrights_ at that time - or machinists as we call them today.
