This was formerly running on Sparc and Solaris (SunOS) IIRC. IIRC they tried to move to HP-UX as well and the Linux port was a recovery from some long delays in a new version. Unix was the big move and then they were moving it all to Linux. Too bad the government moved away from Unix and Posix to Windows. (I would've preferred more VMS in the day -- but that seemed a dead issue.) Another OS in use back then that's pretty dead now was the mainframe like Interdata/Perkin Elmer/Concurrent Computer OS/32. NIST had found that Linux/Unix had more documented security issues that MS windows in hard numbers and many more when normalized on installed base.(Sorry Charlie) The NIST report that was quoted on studies by US government agencies of security issues about OS vulnerabilities. In the comments there were 1925 cases of Android issues, 3661 Windows issues and 4568 Linux issues. The reference was National Vulnerability Database at NIST. It opens some real Linux open source issues the least of which is cases where "Updates" were added designed to make applications that used the code carry vulnerable fragments so the application code could be compromised. (Something similar happened to an application library a few months ago at apple) So much for many eyes on the problem. I have customers that have been reporting increasing numbers of Linux security type problems with hidden back doors. This is enough of a problem that we have started tracking details. w..

Determine who is careless. If deliberate remove those people from the pool of developers. That may be a job for NSA investigators and FBI arresters.

OSX and iOS topped the list (particularly the "high vulnerability" column), while linux was third (but windows had more "high vulnerability" issues). Internet Exploder tops the list by far on the application side.

Even a 1% OS issue is serious. If I can think of ways to crack an OS, you can be sure that others have thought of hundreds more. Why are apps that insecure if the OS is secure? In DECism terms, everyone got to have POKE. privs with direct access to all hardware locs. /BAH

I could make you very sorry you had let it run. Are you sure that Microsoft routinely lets Microsoft applications bypass the OS? I believe that's what you said - or at least implied.

It was a program loader that also did some other stuff. IMO, to extrapolate from nothing to something is highly suspect.
