Unfortunately, the way to achieve that is this: disarm Israel, so that the Jews
there are under the rule of Muslims, and live like Coptic Christians in Egypt
do - in fear that their daughters might be raped with no recourse.

Sorry, the terrorists must only lose, not win.

I understand your sentiment. I think it's important that we remain free as well.

However, when one is dealing with terrorists willing to commit suicide attacks,
vigilant police enforcement may not, in itself, be sufficient to reduce the
level of terrorism to one compatible with carrying on life in an ordinary
manner.

People like Timothy McVeigh and Anders Breivik are so *rare* that handling the
threat from _them_ in the manner you recommend would be sufficient.

The threat from Islamic terrorism, however, seems to have the potential for exponential growth - terrorists seem to be quite persuasive in finding recruits. Apparently being a terrorist is, at least among Sunni and Shia Muslims, not a sufficient number of standard deviations away from the mean to be acceptably rare.

Thus, the *obvious* solution is to close Europe, North America, Australia and
so on to Muslim immigration - and to evict pretty much everyone who came there,
or whose ancestors came there, from the Muslim world after, oh, say 1965. That
way, we'll have our countries back the way they were, before politicians
without broad popular support, made mistakes that led to the difficulties we're
now having.

And so this isn't just "regrouping", of course the Islamic world _itself_ might
well be under "a military state that controls your every move" until such time
as the new generation is properly trained in inclusive and tolerant attitudes
and the mind-set behind terrorism is fully discredited and marginalized.

But that's wrong! And highly impractical too.

Well, maybe. But it's still the *obvious* alternative (along with just killing the lot of them) and so continued terrorism at current levels will inevitably lead to anti-Muslim sentiments incompatible with the desired march of progress of our society to ever-greater levels of tolerance and inclusiveness.

There you go again with your obsession with rape.

Not even possible to ensure that.

But that isnt even possible because there is no way to detect them in
advance.

We have in face not seen much of an increase
in that since what we saw in say the 60s with Bader
Meinhof and the Red Brigade and the Olympics etc.

Yes, there will always be some that find terrorism
attractive. That's been doing on for centurys now.

You could have said the same thing in the 60s.

Mindlessly simplistic and wouldn't do a damned thing
about terrorism by the natives like McVeigh and Brevik.

That would be absolutely guaranteed to produce many more terrorists.

> That way, we'll have our countries back the way they were,

With the level of home grown terrorism we saw in the 60s. No thanks.

> before politicians without broad popular support, made

Even sillier than you usually manage. The problem in the middle east is
due to the massive interference in their affairs that has been going on
since well before even WW1 and happened on a grand scale after WW1
with the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and after WW2 in spades once
we realised that there was so much easy to produce crude oil there.

Not even possible Britain couldn't even manage to hold onto
Aden or the Canal or Palestine, let alone rule the entire middle
east. You're completely off with the fucking fairys, as always.

No maybe about it.

Only for those that don't have a fucking clue.

Not even possible.

Corse yours is nothing like that, eh ?

Cept for moslems, eh ?

Unfortunately the other Japanese officers did not believe him.

I'm not convinced that many of them did believe that that
the US would recoil in fear and step aside after Pearl Harbor.

It was much more about the fact of the oil embargo against
Japan by the US which was supplying the bulk of the oil that
Japan was using, post the rape of Nanking, with Japan
attempting to take the oil fields in what is now Indonesia
so they could thwart the embargo.

The Japs attempted to eliminate the US Pacific fleet and
it was only pure bad luck for them that saw the most
important carriers not actually in port at Pearl Harbor
and eliminated like the battleships were.

The Jap military essentially expected that with the US
Pacific fleet wiped out, that the US would decide that
places like the Philippines were undefendable and
that the isolationists would prevail in the US.

It was only Yamamoto who really understood what
the reaction of the US public would be to Pearl Harbor.
They didn’t really give a damn about the Philippines.

MacArthur seemed to have been oblivious to the Pearl Harbor attack, "The
Admirals: Nimitz, Halsey, Leahy, and King--The Five-Star Admirals Who
Won the War at Sea" pg227/loc3475-80:

Nine hours later, after other Japanese air attacks against northern
Luzon were reported, several hundred Mitsubishi bombers and Zero
fighters roared over Clark Field outside Manila and destroyed the bulk
of American airpower in the Philippines—MacArthur’s air force—as it sat
on the ground. Even after years of increasingly hostile Japanese
intentions and fair evidence that something was building to a head in
the Far East, some might be tempted to forgive MacArthur for being the
victim of a surprise attack. But how could he still have his airplanes
lined up wingtip to wingtip nine hours after being notified of the
attack on Pearl Harbor? Two days later, with Philippine skies generally
void of defending planes, another Japanese air attack destroyed the
American naval base at Cavite.

"The Generals: American Military Command from World War II to Today"
pg126/loc:1798-1801:

In December 1941, even after being informed of the Japanese surprise
attack on Pearl Harbor, he failed to disperse American aircraft on the
ground in the Philippines, where he was in command, resulting in the
loss of almost all his advanced warplanes, which were P-40 fighters and
B-17 bombers. Similarly, in June 1950, he badly underestimated North
Korean capabilities. He compounded misunderstanding with imprudence in
his handling of forces and arrogance in his dealings with his superiors
in Washington.

And for that Short and Kimmel got reprimanded, demoted, and transferred
while MacArthur got to be a big hero. If a general ever deserved to
have a grenade rolled into his tent or "accidentally" slip overboard it
was MacArthur.

That is the fog of war. The USA did not understand the new tactics Japan
was using - air bombing from carriers with big bombs - and how to defend
against them.

The aircraft were layout to defend against ground attack by infantry and
special forces.

You're conflating the Philippines with Pearl Harbor. The US military
most assuredly did understand air bombing with big bombs--the US had
bigger bombers with bigger bombs in the Philipplines than anything that
the Japanese had--four squadrons of B-17s to be exact, and understood
full well how to use them and how to defend against them (which is why
there were 5 squadrions of interceptors).

And most of the Japanese aircraft used in the Philippines campaign were
land-based, not flying from carriers.

Not in the Philippines, where the aircraft were fueled, armed, manned,
ready, and nobody could get MacArthur to pull his finger out of his butt
long enough to give the order to attack.

Thw bio of Macarthur on Wikipedia says: "For his defense of the Philippines,
MacArthur was awarded the Medal of Honor." Note however that it doesn't say
the Congresssional Medal of Honor.

Wikipedia also say the Congressional Medal of Honor is awarded for acts of
personal valor. I never heard of any such act on his part. Is this just a
part of the old boy's club? I looked at the "Talk" tab on Wikipedia but it
was no help. Why is such a blatant lack of clarity allowed in Wikipedia?
That article must be several years old by now.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_MacArthur

At 03:30 local time on 8 December 1941 (about 09:00 on 7 December in
Hawaii),[119] Sutherland learned of the attack on Pearl Harbor and
informed MacArthur. At 05:30, the Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army,
General George Marshall, ordered MacArthur to execute the existing war
plan, Rainbow Five. MacArthur did nothing. On three occasions, the
commander of the Far East Air Force, Major General Lewis H. Brereton,
requested permission to attack Japanese bases in Formosa, in accordance
with prewar intentions, but was denied by Sutherland. Not until 11:00
did Brereton speak with MacArthur about it, and obtained
permission.[120] MacArthur later denied having the conversation

At 12:30, nine hours after the attack on Pearl Harbor, aircraft of
Japan's 11th Air Fleet achieved complete tactical surprise when they
attacked Clark Field and the nearby fighter base at Iba Field, and
destroyed or disabled 18 of Far East Air Force's 35 B-17s, 53 of its 107
P-40s, three P-35s, and more than 25 other aircraft. Most were destroyed
on the ground. Substantial damage was done to the bases, and casualties
totaled 80 killed and 150 wounded.[122] What was left of the Far East
Air Force was all but destroyed over the next few days.[123]

Any good history tells the true story of MacArthur and the Philippines,
as well as screw-ups by FDR, ie "FDR" by Ted Morgan.

Also, when Truman fired MacArthur, military leaders, like Eisenhower,
who knew the full story, agreed that it was the correct decision.

However, as mentioned, MacArthur had a powerful P/R capability, and
accounted for his mystique.

That's because "Congressional" is not part of the name of it.

He apparently did quite a lot in WWI, in WWII, not so much. I
understand that Eisenhower agreed, and it's not sour grapes--they
offered it to Ike and he turned it down.

MacArthur assured FDR his planes were n the air so they wouldn't be
caught on the ground.

A book written not long after the war stated that he had put those
planes in the air, and when they ran low on fuel, they landed.

But lining them up wind tip to wingtip, any amount of time after the
attack of Pearl, was stupid.

MacArthur, like J E Hoover, was a p/r genius. They didn't blame
MacArthur since they needed his image, while the leaders of Hawaii
were unknown and made into scapegoats. Clearly, MacArthur was far
more to blame than the Hawaii leaders were.

Earlier, MacArthur disregarded H Hoover's orders and used excessive
force to disperse the bonus army, and H Hoover got the blame for that.

So many politicians fail to think what an enemy will do against
overwhelming strength. The most powerful is not a deterrent, it is in
general an indication that they can not be trusted.

A friend of mine during the Vietnam war's response to Vietcong armed
with primitive weapons standing up to the most sophisticated weapons in
the world to "Why doesn't he realize his cause if futile?" responded
"How can anyone win against anyone who is willing to do that?"

There are many cases where response to to power should be looked at in
more detail, start with the Battle of Britain.

A biography of McNamera indicates the military was very frustrated
with the Viet Cong for refusing to come out to fight in a way that
the Americans expected and would be beneficial to American tactics.

Oddly, I'm told American military strategy classes recognized the
fight against guerilla warefare in 1962, but somehow those lessons
never made it to Vietnam. The prosecution of the war was horrendous.
(Not helping was that generals on the ground in 'nam were sending
back false reports to McN, and McN used them in his statistical battle
plans.)

Ever read the biography of Giap? He's quoted as admitting that he was
beaten and that it would take him a decade or more to recover--the
Americnas then withdrawing he regarded as something of a miracle.

It really wasn't the plucky little VC showing the bumbing yanks how it
was done, it was the politicians and the peace movement that got the US
out of Vietnam.

Because it became obvious that the US military was never going to be
able to stop the vietcong from attacking anything they liked.

You kill him of course.

Something which is not well understood about Vietnam is that the US was
not defeated militarily--it was not a case of the US military running
away with its tail between its legs. It was a case of the US military
achieving every objective set for it and then the politicians decided
that they were bored with the war so they set it the objective of coming
home.

Not sure what lesson you think exists there other than "don't attack a
country armed with the most capable defensive aircraft the world had
ever seen, using an insufficient quantity of undersized bombers without
adequate escorts".
