However, unless Gordon has refreshed the rtb .deb package recently the example programs and manual will not be where the manpage says they should be. I'm unsure where to find the example code but the manual is a PDF linked from the bottom of the Return To Basics history page on https://projects.drogon.net/rtb/ -- martin@ | Martin Gregorie gregorie. | Essex, UK org |

A web search, which led me to the page on the GCC site where the test tools included are described, as well as yielding other results, has left me none the wiser about which test suite you are referring to. Only a FORTRAN test suite which was described as being fairly easy to pass, unlike an NBS one, turned up in those results as being actually from the U. S. Navy; I found no other attributions of a compiler test suite thereto. John Savard

It will build the compiler three times in total (the second two using the compiler built the first time).

I wonder if that's because there's one kind CPU in the >world. You really should get out more. :-/ I have worked almost exclusively with ARM stuff since around 2010, and off and on half the decade previously. Now even my laptops are ARM-based. I have been presenting the numbers for "real computers" here earlier. Numbers are very difficult yo get by, so we have to be indirect. If we let the numbers of MMUs set the count of "real computers" (i.e. with virtual memory) we see a 2015 production go past the world's population for the first time. x86'es are a billion, max. The rest (Sparc, MIPS, ppc etc) are 300m max. I count mmu-equipped units here). The balance is ARM. Look at it from a chip producer's standpoint. You can make the lesser ARMs from a readily available blueprint for around $0.30 a piece in license cost. This is no contest. Yes, the x86 has the current speed advantage. But the ARMs are crawling up from behind, with a lot better mips per watt ratio. That is what it all boils down to in all the small stuff in your car, phone, alarm, stove, tv, modem, microwave, etc. The next generation of these may have as much cpu power as your pc, at least to the x86 i5 level without burning more than around a watt. And 50 mW in trickle standby mode. I did some back-of-the-envelope stuff about having the balance of the PDP8 weight filled by LiIon batteries, and that would give me at least 300 Ah of 12V LiIon power; which would power a raspberry pi (0.4A at 5.25V in semi-standby) for two and a half months. -- mrr

Only one kind of CPU in the world. What?
Barb -- Windows runs on both Intel x86 and Arm and amd64 (x88_64)
and GCC 4.3.5 still supported VAX on NetBSD and OpenBSD.
IA64 is the Itanium. I think that gcc still runs on Alpha and Itanium VMS.
Vax support of VMS GCC bitrotted away a while ago, I think.
I don't know if PDP11 cross compilation works anymore but I have
older GCC that should work somewhere downstairs on a CDROM from the
1990s...
Some of the below are cross compilation targets, I think but still it's not
ONE cpu type.

That's a list of what has been or is supported over the years. Are there really edit trails for each one; and none have been remastered? Sounds like a headache waiting to explode. So how is the C compiler code organized? I would have a module for each CPU type instead of conditionals. Or does the C compiler code use a default based on the system doing the build unless a /CPU switch is on the COMPILE C.* command line? /BAH

Version control systems are wonderful things these days, so yes there's a version history for everything and it isn't going to get lost because there are a lot of copies of it (if they've switched to git then there will be an amazing number of copies). > So how is the C compiler code organized? Or does the C compiler code use a > default based on the system doing the build unless a /CPU switch > is on the COMPILE C.* command line? It has been a long time and it has probably changed in detail but gcc starts with the observation that all compilers are pretty much the same - they parse source code according to syntax rules into some kind of internal representation of the code, then they perform optimisations on that model, then they generate code from the optimised code (the code generation may contain another level of optimisation). So turing completeness and all that means that with a good enough internal model you get to do the model level optimisation code once, the front end once per language and the code generator once per target to automatically get all languages on all targets. Even for the code generators there's a lot of utility code available (I recall seeing a generic register allocation routine that used a table defining the available registers) to make life easier. -- Steve O'Hara-Smith | Directable Mirror Arrays C:>WIN | A better way to focus the sun The computer obeys and wins. | licences available see You lose and Bill collects. | http://www.sohara.org/

I remember Morten requesting a different kind of compiler language about 8 years ago with requirements which aren't provided by current compiler languages. It's this part which has to be developed for every rendition of CPU architecture. Now I'm wondering if disk architectures need to be considered when building a compiler. I just know enough about system configurations these days. > > So turing completeness and all that means that with a good enough > internal model you get to do the model level optimisation code once, the > front end once per language and the code generator once per target to > automatically get all languages on all targets. Interesting. Is there any way you can backup the entire edit history of the compiler yous use just in case you lose internet access? BTW, thanks for answering my questions which were not expressed well. :-) /BAH

The way git works is that when you 'clone' the repository you get the entire history locally. You can work locally and commit to your local history. Normally you would create a branch just for your work. When you are ready you merge your changes back into the master branch (maybe squashing all your intermediate commits so it looks like an atomic operation on master). You then commit and push the changes back up to the main repository on the internet. -- Andy Leighton => andyl@azaal.plus.com "We demand rigidly defined areas of doubt and uncertainty!" - Douglas Adams
