The Prison-Industrial Complex http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/1998/12/the-prison-industrial-complex/304669/ On January 17, 1961, President Dwight D. Eisenhower used his farewell address to issue a warning, as the United States continued its cold war with the Soviet Union. "In the councils of government," Eisenhower said, "we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex." Eisenhower had grown concerned about this new threat to democracy during the 1960 campaign, when fears of a "missile gap" with the Soviet Union were whipped up by politicians, the press, and defense contractors hoping for increased military spending. Eisenhower knew that no missile gap existed and that fear of one might lead to a costly, unnecessary response. "The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist," Eisenhower warned. "We should take nothing for granted." ... snip ... The Prison State of America http://www.commondreams.org/views/2014/12/29/prison-state-america Fines, often in the thousands of dollars, are assessed against many prisoners when they are sentenced. There are 22 fines that can be imposed in New Jersey, including the Violent Crime Compensation Assessment (VCCB), the Law Enforcement Officers Training & Equipment Fund (LEOT) and Extradition Costs (EXTRA). The state takes a percentage each month out of prison pay to pay down the fines, a process that can take decades. If a prisoner who is fined $10,000 at sentencing must rely solely on a prison salary he or she will owe about $4,000 after making payments for 25 years. Prisoners can leave prison in debt to the state. And if they cannot continue to make regular payments--difficult because of high unemployment--they are sent back to prison. High recidivism is part of the design. ... snip ... Conservatives want to turn the clock back to about 1900, eliminating the New Deal and anti-trust regulations. They think the robber barons who exploited labor were heroes. > Aside from a few fringe nutjobs, liberals do not expect equality of > outcome, only equality of opportunity. However, gross inequality of > outcome is usually an _indicator_ of inequality of opportunity. I have to disagree there. A great many liberals do expect equality of outcome, ignoring critical factors, and being real quick to make excuses for poor performance, including pulling the race card when it is not justified. For instance, activists in Phila are always claiming racism when the governing officials, including the DA, city council, police chief and cops, and others are almost all African American and have been for years. Other activists in Phila claimed there was deliberate racial segregation in the past in places where I knew it was not, for instance, they said schools were segregated, but old high school yearbooks prove otherwise. When a few brave African Americans tell their people that they have to stop making excuses, focus on the right goals, and just work harder to succeed; they get hammered from all the rest of African American activists. The Moynihan report was deemed politically incorrect and ignored, but it did contain very valid concerns about the decay of the urban environment.

Speaking for myself, I certainly feel oppressed by conservative actions: --the actions of evangelical Christians shoving religion down our throat and interfering with public school teachings. --the actions of the rich that have increased their payouts while reducing workers' wages, increasing their workload, and killing their pensions. The wealthy cry poverty and use that as an excuse for job layoffs and compensation cuts, but they're raking in huge dividends and stock appreciation, taxed at a low rate.

Also, the "individual liberty" of corporations to pollute air and water supplies of others, even though the Constitution explicitly includes the power to regulate commerce, and such pollution was against common law even centuries ago. > > It's not so much a particular, although I'm partial to the > > 1950s myself, > > It was a pretty good time for rich, old, white, straight, Christian, > racist men--and pretty bad for everyone else. Well, your group did maintain its superiority over everyone else. However, in the 1950s, the rising tide _did_ lift all boats of U.S. society. While African Americans were still at the bottom, there was some movement for better educational and job opportunities and less discrimination. Also, as other Americans got more money, so did blacks. In those years, many Puerto Ricans came to the mainland for better economic opportunities. > Then why are "conservatives" so obsessed with growing the government and > increasing interference with individuals? > Your party does not stand for what you think it does. Conservatives have an external agenda of 'smaller government' which is touted on talk-radio and Fox News, but a real agenda of bigger government for their special interests. Certain government agencies that conservatives like (such as defense and law enforcement) don't 'count' in their quest for smaller government. It's all about ideology. As mentioned, conservatives want to kill off Amtrak, NEA, and PBS because they're all 'evil', while keeping the government running highways and airways (nice subsidies for the highway and airline interests).

Actually, there's a pretty good case that the guys who put the US Constitution together essentially hijacked the Declaration of Independence. The rights (inter alia) declared "self-evident" in the latter were far too liberal, failing, as they did, to give primacy to property. The Constitution fixed that for (white) men of property at the expense of "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness". I'd have to dig for the serious academic references in my dead-tree library but I didn't just make that idea up on my own. Google might help. -- Mike Spencer Nova Scotia, Canada

Silly English, calling the Iroquois the "Five Nations" (or later "Six Nations"). Presumably the English failed to import any political scientists, who would have set them straight.

Quite apart from the catastrophic impact of the European conquest of the New World on the cultural, political, and technical achievements of the indigenous people... a self-governing group of people with a common language and culture should be recognized as having an inherent right of independence, along the principles of the Treaty of Westphalia, the Fourteen Points, or the United Nations Charter regardless of how it grows its food. Any justification of European settlement of the New World has to rest on aggression against initial settlers by some tribes, not on a claim that people who hunt, unlike people who farm, have no right to the land that feeds them.
