Besides, the Republican party has changed by 180 degrees over the last 150 years (most of that over the last sixteen years). Check again, the delegates from most states are obligated by law to vote in accordance with the state ballot on the first round at the convention. After that fewer are so obligated with each round. As for "coming down with food poisoning", there are alternates for that eventuality. You don't get out of obeying the law quite that easily.

I'd like to see Kasich, and my wife, who is a Democrat, would support him as well in preference to you-know-who. The Tea Party types are mostly Republicans (a few may be third parties, like Libertarian or Constitution). While there were probably a few Dems who snuck in to cause mischief, I don't think they were significant. After all, the Dems had their own tightly fought race going on, and you couldn't play in both. The problem for the Republicans was, Donnie had that 25% of the crowd that believes in reality TV, and the rest of the vote was split between all the dwarves, none of who were going to bow out and give their voters to another. And Trump knows how to be larger than life, he's a performer. Cruz wasn't a good choice, because he seems to be hated by everyone who's ever had personal contact with him even if they share his ideology. If Cruz and Rubio and Bush and Christie had all pulled out early, you'd have had Kasich for your nominee. In Dem circles, you'll hear dire warnings about "Naderites" or "BernieBros" who would tip the election to the Republicans. But this year, all of the Republican candidates were spoilers. It's an argument for Independent Runoff Voting in the primaries, I suppose, Trump wasn't going to be anyone's second or third choice. There is nothing wrong with the British people indicating that they would prefer to be in a European Common Market, like it used to be - a free market, with each nation still having absolute control over things like immigration. Now, it may be that this is not a choice the EU will make available - they will try to impose harsh conditions on Britain, denying it any chance to be in the European Free Trade Area without accepting nearly all the conditions that came with EU membership. Since it is the elected representatives that would actually trigger Article 50, and the referendum was actually non-binding, it's not as if there's really a problem here. They can decline to leave the EU until a more opportune moment arrives. Like after a few other countries, those France wishes to deter, hold their referendums, so that there is some bargaining power on the other side here. John Savard
