Your only mistake is believing the DOD's numbers. By the time we have operational units, total costs will double and total units will halve, i.e. each F-35 will cost _four times_ its weight in gold. Worse, going by the results of operational tests (where F-35s got slaughtered by F-16s, at less than a tenth the price), F-35s will be less useful in combat than simply throwing gold bricks at the enemy. Yes, but its much more likely that they would wait till its dark to collect them them they are to just run around looking for them where they can be shot while doing that. And even if they are actually stupid enough to end up getting shot in that situation, that isnt going to make any real difference in the situation where F35s are used.

Gold slugs dropped from high enough to reach terminal velocity would kill or cripple someone who gets hit; obviously, the targeting isn't very precise, but for the cost of an F-35, you could literally drop millions of them--and kill more people than a single F-35 ever would. Also, all that gold on the ground would attract lots of people who weren't killed, e.g. because they were indoors, so splitting the mass into two or three drops would greatly multiply the total casualties. Instead of gold, though, they're using another substance probably almost as valuable (or maybe several times more valuable, don't know which offhand)... something known as "depleted uranium". Maybe as costly, but probably not very valuable otherwise. It's what's
left over after removing the "good stuff" (U-235). Other than armor
and armor-penetrating rounds, the primary uses seem to be radiation
shielding and (at one time) counterweights. 1998 price was $5/lb. eBay
is probably not a good place to buy it, 2.5 grams will set you back
$48 ("OBO") there.

All you have to do with it is leave it lying around inside a nuclear reactor to let neutrons hit it... which isn't that complicated or expensive to do... and it becomes unstable Uranium-239, which undergoes beta decay twice. Becoming Plutonium-239, which is just as good as Uranium-235. Yes, reprocessing isn't _entirely_ trivial, but that's why U-238 is also subjected to strict controls as something that's easy to make A-bombs out of. John Savard

If you have a working reactor already then it's really too late to stop you from getting weapons-grade material. However making a bomb with plutonium is rather difficult. U-238 is easy--slam two chunks of it together around a neutron source and Bob's your uncle. Plutonium poisons the reaction faster than it can develop when used with that approach--you get a fizzle, not a bang. That's why Fat Man used an imposion design, to achieve critical mass faster than the reaction could poison itself.

The spot market price for uranium ore is about $35/lb. Depleted uranium is the waste product that is left after that ore is enriched for use in reactors and weapons. If it didn't have useful mechanical properties it would be worth as much as mine tailings.
