IBM ran a few ads in C&A touting the usability of its PL/I compiler. The ad copy is shown here. MEET PL/I C&A-1968-10 The story of how a single language answers the question, "Can a young girl with no previous programming experience find happiness handling bath commercial and scientific applications, without resorting to an assembler language?" Let's face it. The cost of programming just keeps going up. So for some time to come, how well you do your job depends on how programmers like Susie Meyer do theirs. That's the reason for PL/I, the high-level language for both scientific and commercial applications. With PL/I, programmers don't have to learn other high-level languages. They can concentrate more on the job, less on the language. So think about PL/I. Not just in terms of training, but in terms of the total impact it can have on your operation. Take it a step at a time. Programmers don't have to learn all of PL/I to use it. Take New York Life Insurance Company for 'example. First programmer trainees get a good grounding in computer basics. Then a combination of PL/I self-study courses and workshops readies them to code meaningful and useful programs. As the new programmers gain skill and experience they use other parts of the language on tougher problems. Most importantly, they learn while doing. Freedom of expression! That's what it's all about. The same features that make PL/I easy to learn make it easy to use. First of all, programming time can be shortened by using a single high-level language. In most cases, assembler languages aren't even needed anymore. There's also a feature that simplifies coding for inexperienced program- mers. It automatically makes a choice among al- ternatives. The language provides a new ease of writing. It's neither cryptic nor verbose. The result is a new freedom of expression - freedom from arbitrary language restrictions-freedom to concentrate on application development. A bright future for Susie. PL/I has growth built in. As your system grows, PL/I will grow right along with it. Continued growth of PL/I means a brighter future for your programmers. It also means continued use of your pro- grams' and equipment-- with a minimum impact on your investment.

This explains why PL/I never caught on, while FORTRAN and COBOL continue to this day. What self-respecting programmer would use a language that's designed for... girls! And, of course, this is despite the fact that Grace Hopper was pivotal in bringing COBOL into existence, or that most computer programmers, having undergone the transition known as "puberty", don't quite look upon girls the way boys in Grade 1 do. (But back in the 1960s, their view of women probably hadn't yet broadened to include thinking of them as equal colleagues in such fields as computer programming!) John Savard

There was an article in C&A (1965-04) about a bank's hiring policies regarding its programmers. The banker made it quite clear the bank had two distinct personnel policies, one for men, one for women, as well as different wage scales. Indeed, the bank did a "experiment" to pay men and women programmers the same wage. Also, the bank made heavy use of a psychological profile test to determine who to hire. After a while, they scaled back on that, although they did insist on a 'reasoning' test, i.e. "What is the second day after Sunday?" Based on the article, I am glad I didn't work for that organization. Even though it was a relatively small bank, they seemed very smug about themselves, and like their employees to do things _exactly_ per defined procedure.

Which is fine, if you are a suburbia transaction bank; where the private payment transactions dominate over loans/deposits. Then you need repeatability and behaving like one big machine is a plus. Now mostly replaced by network banking and ATMs. BTDT. In 1978-82. Once you go outside that scope, and handle mortgages, business transactions, loans and big/many deposits you need people that can think outside the box. Real bankers, an almost extinct breed today. Programmers are another breed entirely. -- mrr

Further, when new services are introduced, more creative tellers can usually deal with them better--they can intuitively figure out the new situation, where as someone dependent on rote has to refer to manuals or memory. We had a large bank that was rather regimented. They introduced an ATM card, and between the cumbersome procedures and staff ignorance, it was a nightmare for the customers.

Women have been "programming" way before any males did. Think of crochet and knitting patterns. Think of the geometries of quilting. NPR has been airing pieces about how males keep females out of the computer biz. I simply don't understand this and have been suspecting that it's another NOW scheme to "prove" inequality. There were always females where I worked. /BAH

Yeah, blame it on NOW (haven't heard that acronym since 1985). Anyone who has been in the business for for the last 35 years knows simply from observation that females in computing have gone from 38% of the workforce to 18% of the workforce between 1985 and 2016, and the numbers continue to decrease. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women_in_computing#Statistics_in_the_workforce It's more appropriate to blame it on pop culture (and the general disdain in which "geeks" are held therin).

My wife did a paper on this back in 1990. There was evidence from her research that, in the UK at least, the introduction of computers to the home was a factor. Most games were male-oriented, and girls became disenchanted with computers from an early age. Go back to the 1970s and you found a roughly 50/50 male/female split. -- Using UNIX since v6 (1975)... But I do know that in the I.T. world there has always been great variation from one site to another, as well as from one sub- specialty to another. > It's more appropriate to blame it on pop culture (and the general > disdain in which "geeks" are held therin). They have conducted studies that little children have innate tendencies and preferences, despite what progressives want to believe. For instance, boys are the ones that tend to gravitate toward construction toys, and girls to other fields. (Not every boy nor every girl will do so, most kids will do so.) Fortunately, at least today, a girl who wants to be a civil engineer can do so (as done by my neighbor, who is doing quite well.) There are also many girls' sports team for those who are interested. Today, progressives are worried about the lack of girls' interest in science and technology. I don't know if that's merely because girls just aren't naturally interested, or, if social pressures play a role. It is clear that among youth today, social pressures, reinforced by the media and fashion, play a big role. Most kids (with some exceptions, of course) do not ever want to perceived as "weird" or "geeky". Kids today are very conformist for the most part. I do not know how much peer pressure influences--consciously or sub-consciously--in discouraging girls from science and technology. But I suspect it plays a part.

Kids today are very conformist for the most part. Well, I'd take out the word "today", for one thing. Social pressures can point in different directions, with influence from the surrounding culture, and hence even from something so potentially malleable as the mass media. Damon of Athens wrote, "Let me write the songs of a nation, and I care not who writes its laws". While I believe in the part of the basic principle of the First Amendment that protects every viewpoint in political debate, so that the people have the ability to be the ones to decide what their representatives should do, allowing censorship and control of entertainment, so that it elevates rather than degrades, so that it does not sink to the lowest common denominator, does not seem to be unreasonable. If someone tried to make the case for genocide with facts and figures, he would not get far, but dramas or comedies that perpetuate stereotypes can engender hatred. John Savard

When it comes to the mass media, people do 'vote' by what they choose to watch. Likewise with fashion. The progressive community has attempted many times to use the mass media to influence popular thinking, but it hasn't been as successful as they'd liked. In the end, some messages simply do not get absorbed. Society will evolve at its own pace, regardless of what certain elements--liberal or conservative--want it to do. For instance, women aren't supposed to be 'sex objects'. But women's (and girl's) clothes are as sexy as ever. There's a current TV show that has an extremely progressive subject matter, and extremely lousy ratings. (The Fosters, Freeform/ABC Family, about two married women raising racially diverse adopted kids.) In re-reading the IBM ad, I am surprised how sexist it is, especially for 1968. Even though the vast bulk of the ad focuses on the advantages of PL/I, it still is based on "the happiness of a young girl". Of course, as mentioned, the Penn Central railroad news letter always featured a pretty young female secretary on the cover every month, standing on a boxcar or other piece of equipment. That was pretty commonplace back then. Attitudes were that secretaries were honored to be selected.

Too many gas stations have women customers who wouldn't like seeing such a calendar posted in the office. A lot of shops have women assistants (like the owner's wife) who would also find them objectionable. Do places like machine shops still have them? In the old days, however, such calendars (and advertisements in auto/machine shop magazines) were very cheesecake--girls in rather skimpy bikinis posed on the hardware.

Ones in fashion magazines are so unattractive, I think that they are aimed at a different market than glamour pictures. The pictures that are described above (Pirelli tyres calenders for instance) hide the fact, that, in my experience, girls like those photographed are so egocentric and `contrary' that one is better off away from them. On the one had models, and girls who emulate them, want to be thinner while the female population in general is (AFAIK) becoming larger. On the other hand someone like Amy Schumer, who looks like a perfectly normal young woman is trashed as being "fat." I can't believe that too many men appreciate women who are painfully thin. -- Pete

The computer industry also had calendars and promo pictures of babes posing as "users" or "operators". They were usually in what could marginally be passed as formal office attire somewhere far from IBM, but the babe factor was obvious. They were almost always "operating" or "using" compureters that were not powered up or conneted to anything. The cable bundles going off behind the cpu and i/o cabinets were always absent, and any power lights were out, and pictures on the terminals were always obviously pasted in. And they were done in studio lighting . VERY bright, something that would lead to no end of glare on terminals. Pre ca 1985 the light levels of the VDUs were not very bright, and would not have been easily readable in sunshine or in studio lighing. -- mrr

While they did utilize attraction young women, computer ads were definitely more understated and professional than say ads for automotive equipment.
