If we didn't have the New Deal, we wouldn't have our country today. The US was lucky it created the New Deal. Other countries did not, and were destroyed by communisim or facism. P.S. If you were personally an adult in the Depression as you claim, you'd be 100 years old. Doubt it.

That is very arguable indeed. > The US was lucky it created the New Deal. Other countries did not, > and were destroyed by communisim or fascism. That mangles the real story. Yes, some other countries were destroyed by communism, but they mostly weren't affected by the Great Depression so the communism there wasn't the result of the not having anything like the New Deal. And Germany had quite a lot of what came later in the New Deal well before the Great Depression and was into the sort of Keynesian govt spending that came with the New Deal which got it out of the worst of the unemployment problem that the Great Depression produced there, done by the fascists. Same with Italy. And Britain didn't have anything like the New Deal and didn't end up communist or fascist either. > P.S. The reality is that every cent that you pay into social security and medicare goes to either (a) somebody who is on social security or medicare, or (b) a super low interest loan to the Federal government, which promptly spends the money. My dollars are exchanged for a future obligation to me, and their present obligation is exchanged for those dollars. When I deposit money in the bank, they don't set those specific bills aside for me; they just credit my account and give the bills out to someone else (and debit their account). > or (b) a super low interest loan to the Federal government, which > promptly spends the money. As long as the Federal govt doesn't default on that debt, it's a sound (if poorly performing) investment. The SSTF can sell all those T-bills it's holding on the open market, just like anyone else, when the annual surplus turns into an annual deficit in a few years. The problem comes when the SSTF runs out of T-bills to sell and is _still_ running a deficit; according to my annual statements, they'll only have enough money to pay me about 1/3 of the benefits I'm due, assuming Congress doesn't get off their ass and fix it by then. >> The military is _by far_ the next biggest chunk of federal >> spending; other social programs are negligible, and even completely >> eliminating them all would not materially affect the budget (or the >> deficit). >> >> It's not even like that spending is going somewhere useful; we >> spent billions on planes and tanks that go straight from the >> factory to the scrapyard, for instance, and billions more that go >> straight into the pockets of defense contractors who them promptly >> "lose" it. > > Most of those billions go into the pockets of the workers who build > the things or mine the raw materials. No, most goes to the executives and stockholders, who hoard it (doing nothing for the economy) or speculate with it (hurting the economy) rather than spending it (helping the economy) as the workers would. Also, if we're going to spend those trillions of dollars, wouldn't it be better to spend them on things that actually make our lives better and drive the economy, like infrastructure, rather than converting a bunch of scrap metal into a different bunch of scrap metal? Maybe it was possible after WW2 had ended essentially because Ike could put the boot into the MIC so comprehensively and made it impossible for those who wanted to not see any reduction to ensure that. There is a real sense in which the cold war itself was part of that line about perpetual war tho. Less clear why that didn’t happen after WW1 tho. > for the Magazine of Exconomi Affairs and Pentagon Labyrinth > http://chuckspinney.blogspot.com/p/pentagon-labyrinth.html > > This pamphlet aims to help newcomers and seasoned observers grapple with > the problems of national defense. SS paid a lump sump to non-qualified people in Jan 1937, which was exactly equal to the _death_ benefit for qualified people; in effect, Congress declared all non-qualified people dead. That is completely unlike what we think of as SS benefits today, which are only for qualified people. The first monthly benefits check (i.e. what we think of as SS) was paid on 31 Jan 1940 to Ida May Fuller, who had been paying into SS from when it went into effect on 1 Jan 1937 until she filed her retirement claim on 4 Nov 1939, i.e. after nearly three years of contributions. >> My dollars are exchanged for a future obligation to me, and their >> present obligation is exchanged for those dollars. > > You go on believing that there's actually an obligation when that > "obligation" is established by a statute that can be repealed at any > time. If we did default, SS checks would be the least of our problems; the entire world economy would collapse. Perhaps "conservatives" should stop voting for Tea Party idiots who _want_ to default and turn the entire world into Somalia; a failed state is what their vision of "small government" looks like, after all. >> Also, if we're going to spend those trillions of dollars, wouldn't >> it be better to spend them on things that actually make our lives >> better and drive the economy, like infrastructure, rather than >> converting a bunch of scrap metal into a different bunch of scrap >> metal? > > Salaries for workers drive the economy. It doesn't really matter > what they're making Yes, it does; the lower someone's income, the greater the fraction of that income they'll spend (good) rather than hoarding (neutral) or speculating (bad). There is more macroeconomic benefit to paying two people $50k than one person $100k, even though the total is the same. The main macroeconomic benefit of progressive taxation is that it takes more from the rich (who mostly hoard or speculate) and less from the poor (who mostly spend), which benefits everyone--even the rich! > as long as the company gets paid more for it than the cost of making > it. Corporate profits go to the rich, who mostly hoard or speculate. Despite the Faux News propaganda, that does _not_ create jobs; it's spending that creates jobs, and it's the poor who mostly spend. The Supreme Court in the 1960 case of Flemming v. Nestor established that there is no contractual right to Social Security benefits. It's a welfare program with disbursements made at the pleasure of Congress. Social Security "contributions" are implemented as a flat income tax. You have no more contractual claim to those funds than you do to those paid into any other taxation scheme. > Corporate profits go to the rich, who mostly hoard or speculate. Except of course for those many middle-class folks who own stock in said corporations. No matter who profits, it is of course their money to do with as they please. You have no say in it. > spending that creates jobs, and it's the poor who mostly spend. The poor have almost nothing to spend. That's part of the definition. On the other hand, when you discourage those with money from spending it you destroy jobs. One of the textbook examples was the yacht tax in the budget passed by "Read My Lips No New Taxes" Bush the Elder in 1990, which also affected other luxury items. The result of the tax, according to a study done by the Joint Economic Committee, was 7600 jobs destroyed in the boating industry, 1470 in the aircraft industry, and 330 in jewelry manufacturing. These cost $24.2 million in unemployment benefits and lost tax revenue. So the tax was a net loss of $7.6 million to the federal mafia. The real losers were the workers who lost their jobs thanks to these gangsters. -- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Roger Blake (Posts from Google Groups killfiled due to excess spam.) Do you really think the prospective yacht-buyers burned their money instead? It's reasonable to assume they bought something else--and thereby created other jobs that replaced those lost in the taxed industries, which means the tax no net effect. An agreement is a special form of contract where one of the parties implicitly agrees to its terms by taking some other explicit action. The "social contract" is an agreement that, by participating in a society, a person agrees to abide by that society's rules.
