You have just found the reason that standards manuals limit structured
programs to having subroutines no more than 60 lines (=1 page) long
whereas GOTO programs can be 20 pages long.

My 'END' statements had a comment saying what it was attached to.

That limit would be a problem in my work world :-) I never had
problems reading code which spanned more than one page. My
programming style would use dispatch tables when entering a
module for the first time.
>

that's nice if it's kept up to date. In my area, it would be out of
date with the third programmer. We would put a stand-alone comment
at the end of a logical piece of code to indicate the last page
of the routine.

After each monitor edit, one of the procedures was to run a TECO
macro over the sources to match angle brackets.

It would be a problem with many languages, particularly assembler.
OTOH with modern structured languages it's usually not hard to keep blocks
down to a screenful most of the time. These conventions depend very much on
it being possible to put a useful amount of functionality into that space,
and work best for highly expressive structured languages.

That sounds distinctly like assembler, not an environment where
subroutine lengths are something to worry about.

These days sanity checks of that kind (and far more sophisticated
ones up to and including evaluating test coverage) are often implemented as
commit gates to the version control system.

Not sure what kind of assembler you have used, but I've been doing
z/OS HLASM. With structured assembler macros, the same subroutine
length rules apply as any other language.

Nothing that recent, I haven't written any assembler since the
earlyish 1980s so I'm thinking in terms of raw (or nearly raw) assembler
with a few macros used as inline functions. HLASM sounds nice.

It is very nice, but the structured macros actually go way back.
The Bell Labs site I mostly worked at had a few different
structured Assembler packages. This was in the 70s.

With the advent of HLASM, there is a structured assembler
macro package from IBM (finally). With a macro package
the readability of assembler goes way up.

Those labels and lack of indentation in assembler without
a macro package make a real mess.

there were structured assembler macro packages predating HLASM ... I
believe some amount of HLASM came from SLAC. reference to slac assembler
mods at SHARE (1993) which had been going on for some years
http://computer-programming-forum.com/10-asm370/de9f41f48e726586.htm

SLAC also did bit-slice 370 clones (at least enuf to execute fortran
problem state; also used by CERN) for placing along the line for initial
sensor data reduction ... initially "168e" (supposedly thruput of 168)
and then "3081e" (throughput of 3081).

SLAC (vm370 system) was also first webserver (outside europe).

Define "screenful" in modern times.... While many still use 24x80
terminal windows, many use much larger (80x160 aren't uncommon).

Small modules are a sign of a short attention span. 1/2 :-)

Yep, I've walked the halls and seen it myself.
Why anyone sticks with 24x80 when bigger sizes are available
is an unsolved mystery.

So, a screenful is defined by the current worlds available
technology. Not what some Luddite still uses.
About 60 lines.

Normally I find it okay if a routine exceeds that limit
by a bit. You can often ignore a little bit of setup or exit code.
The logic you want to follow tends to be a bit farther into a routine.

My normal working screen has two 80x60ish tabbed terminal windows
side by side - with the other monitor for browsers, email and such. I used
to use half a dozen 80x24 windows before I switched to using tabs.

Not unreasonable - IMHO anyone who takes it rigidly is an idiot,
it's a guideline that says "if it's starting to look like a lot of code then
find a way to break it up before you make it huge".

Yep - it's good to be able to see all of the block managed by a
control statement without losing sight of the control statement.

Perhaps to have multiple visible at the same time... That's why I
prefer 60 line by 80 column xterms - I can have header files, source
files, Makefiles and reference headers open _and visible_ all at the
same time.

Nowadays, I open a wide VIM window and use vertical and horizontal splits
to have two, four, or six files open and visible (which with a common yank
buffer, makes refactoring trivial).

To be clearer, the 24x80 screens were all 3270 screens. All of the
modern 3270 emulators support larger, non-standard sizes like 60x132.
It just requires a little bit of configuration or help from a guru.

Yep, I've seen that.
Not sure how I'd manage all those windows.
I find with Emacs, I only need the one
window. Splitting sometimes, but things like compiles
create automatic splits, so you can edit full screen,
then when you hit compile, the screen splits as a side effect.

24x80 screens were also TD730, TD830, T27, ET1100, MT983 screens.

24x80 screens were also ADM-3A, Wyse-50, VT-52, and a zillion other
screens.

80 being chosen, of course, because it's the number of columns on
a punched card.

I thought today all screens being designed, regardless of what
is in 'the back', were GUI, with variable length fonts,
various 'controls', and graphics. Thus, the very concept of
"24x80" was obsolete.

A lot more information, nicely properly validated, can be entered
on today's GUI screens with the drop down boxes, check boxes,
and spacious free form text fields.

The key question with today's systems is what happens to the
data after the customer or end-user enters it. If a sales order
is out of stock, is someone alerted to that so that more stock
could be ordered, the customer notified, or a refund provided?
(I know that sure as heck isn't always the case as it should be.)

Are other exception situations routed to a human with the tools
and time to handle the problem and resolve it, so a customer
isn't left hanging? (I know that isn't always case either.)

End user stuff. The screens I see at work, are developer screens.
Usually terminals of some type.

I usually only see those types of screens in banks and stores. An
amazing number of those types of screens are fixed size text only
attached to an AS/400 or z/Series.

When using conventional tools like TSO or ROSCOE, there was a
way to reset the screen so that it displayed an entire 132 character
mainframe line. Hard to read, but very useful in reading output.
It was done through the emulator, then a display setting for the
editor.

There are an amazing number of legacy mainframe systems still running
and not going anywhere. I know of a large organization that was
rewriting a large major system into client/server, but the rewrite
took so long that the project was cancelled. New features will be
added on to the mainframe base system instead.

I don't know if I'd recommend a youngster study COBOL and JCL
in college, but I do know many oldsters are retiring. Whether
that translates to widespread new demand for legacy programmers
I cannot say.

Legacy programmers are in great demand...
In India, the Ukraine, ...
