Then there were the two guys from Sandia traveling through Mississippi with parts of a nuclear weapon (they were being used to verify fit with a matching component we were making). Seems that they fit the drug- smuggler profile in use at the time and it didn't help that the one driving was a Mexican citizen (yeah, we actually had a _foreigner_ working on nuclear weapons). The poor cop had never heard of a "Q- clearance". Finally he told the trooper to call the FBI and ask them to come arrest him. The trooper thought that one was weird enough to make the call and the Feds gave him an earful.

That can work two ways! :-) In the 1980's my job location was on Eielson AFB near Fairbanks Alaska, and was located inside a security area. Either a line badge or an escort was required. Only supervisory people had escort ability. So one day while there was a visiting crew of maybe 8 or 9 AF people working in this area (making for a large amount of confusion about people), I decided to head for the Post Office. Unknown to me, there was only one other person with escort authority, and he decided to go across the street for a hamburger. He went out the front door as I went out the back door. When I returned the Security Police had everyone who'd been inside that building on the outside of that building, all lined, literally, "up against the wall". The path to the mockup had 10' portable fabric partitions on either side to prevent us from even viewing the manufacturing floor on the way to the mockup. The mockup was way, way, way cool.

I was told a story by a CE I knew. One of the other CEs didn't have his ID for a federal site, I think it was what is now the national geospatial imagery agency. They knew him, and he had other forms of ID, but he DIDN'T have the badge he needed to wear. So, this was the drill: They wrapped a rolling screen/partition around him, like you might see at an old doctor's office to undress behind. Then, a guy walks ahead, ringing a bell. He can hear doors being kicked shut as he walks inside the rolling "cage". When he gets to the computer room, they have 2 guys stay with him at all times, and they have to accompany him to the bathroom, too. After working on the computer, the procedure is reversed to get him out of the building. (This was also at least 30 years ago, too.) Jon

Keep in mind that a lot of the authors, certainly the prolific ones, in the hobby electronic and amateur radio magazines were semi-pro, they were churning out articles that fit the magazines, rather than simply writing about what they knew. So it was to their benefit to follow transistors, but they never seemed to embrace them that much. I knew an engineer who worked for RCA, then the CBC, in transmitters, and he used solid state, but he always seemed to keep an identity as a "tube man". There's a difference between seeing the value of transistors, and adapting to them. Even the big US radio manufacturers often didnt' adapt, Hallicrafters and other companies were buying Japanese made receivers and putting their name on them right at the end, before those legendary companies disappeared forever. Some of it was the need to move to circuit boards, requiring startup costs, but also just to get into the solid state mindset. We saw the same thing with many old style electronic parts stores. When I found the local stores in 1971, there was a cluster of them in the same area, most had been around for a long time, and still carried tubes and related parts. ONly one was solid state only, seeming to get a lot of stock from Poly Paks in the US. A decade later, all those stores were gone, the solid state one morphing into a computer store. Yes, other factors were involved, like the whole area being redeveloped, but new places started out that were solid state only. Michael

Given those reasons, I suspect hobbyists wouldn't be all that interested-- there wasn't much a hobbyist could do with them. I _think_ the basic concept of the transistor was known to a number of researchers and perhaps several were working on it; only Bell Labs beat them to it with a workable unit. On the other hand, when they built a prototype unit of transistors, it used a fraction of power and was more reliable than its tube counterpart. The had to make a transistor by hand--a technician ran a wire along its surface under a microscope, while watching a monitor for the best gain in current. Later, new designs and techniques (the book describes them) made production manufacturing possible along with higher quality. Around 1957 Tom Watson decreed that all _new_ IBM product designs would be with transistors. The principal new transistor machines were Stretch, 7090, and 1401 which were delivered around 1960. However, IBM kept on building existing popular tube machines, such as the 650 computer and 604 calculator, into the early 1960s. Based on the C&A census, many various IBM tube-based machines remained in service for years afterward. A key feature developed with transistors was the SMS printed circuit card and mount for IBM use.

Yes, I think any EE who was more than 5 years away from retirement, or even the older ones who were still excited about technology, were quite sure the transistor was going to completely revolutionize electronics. And, especially in computers where even the smallest bit-serial machines had several hundred tubes in them, the advantages of moving to something with less drawbacks than tubes must have seemed like a whole new world! I can imagine a few old guys being reluctant to learn all about something quite fundamentally different than the parts they were used to. But, I think everybody else saw what a HUGE improvement transistors could make. Jon
