I haven't seen threm sealed that way for decades ubkess it was for
home-made jelly and presefves. I remember back about 1975 looking into
making candles, and you could buy 25 pound blocks of paraffin from oil
companies. Other companies sold the rest of the items like molds.

I think there's still a product called "GulfWax", even though it
hasn't been made by Gulf Oil Co. in ages.

Yes indeed. Useful for not only sealing homemade jam/jelly and
candles, but lubricating wooden sliding parts (like drawer guides) and
things like zippers. And apparently for dipping/soaking body parts in
to heat-treat them for either aches or beauty, though I have never
personally known of anyone doing it.

I'm not happy with paraffin's ability to lubricate drawer slides, though
I've tried it a couple of times. We used to use it to waterproof matches
for camping and to wax skates and sled runners.

I think the bit about "lubricating zippers" is from when they were metal,
and those are increasingly rarer.

I have a parka with a zipper that acts oddly, but it's because the piece
of material behind it (there to stop the wind that gets through the
zipper) keeps getting stuck, sending it not quite off the rails. It just
zips up funny. But it's plastic, and I don't see how wax would help it.

The zippers used in scuba divers' dry suits are metal, with rubber gaskets
built in. But they're quite heavy, and need a heavier wax to lubricate
properly; something like beeswax is preferred.

We didn't do camping, but for the other stuff--drawers, and sleds, we
used plain bars of soap. Seemed to work adequately enough.

At the risk of branded a heretic (and possibly hypocrite), the Internet
contributed to the decay of modern society. For instance, they say
politics is so terribly polarized because the Internet allows easy
distribution of extremist views. Such views were always around
and publicized, but years ago one had to go out of their way to
access them.

Yep, heretic.

Not sure I agree either.
The main outlet for extremism as I've seen it is talk radio.
The mini-minds on the internet have to get their ideas from somewhere.
They're not very original.

Vietnam surely put us on a bad path.

The war on drugs hasn't helped.
How about waging war on a large chunk of the population.
Not conducive to respect for authority.

Other things like an obsession on sports and disrespect
for intelligence do their part too.
Lots of people seem to support their political party as
if it's a sport team. They don't need logical reasons,
it's their team.

The internet may play a part, but they have the internet in
other countries, but the USA seems to be leading the way
down the chute.

That goes back a long way, to Rome and Byzantium at least, where supporters
of various horse-racing groups would riot in the streets after the
event. (Might have been various chariot-racing). The whole political-party
thing is a racket, allowwing the real powerholders keep control.

Good point.

This morning I heard a talk radio station justify Trump's position.
They didn't exactly come out and agree with it, but they called
it "understandable in the circumstances of the government doing
a terrible job".

> Vietnam surely put us on a bad path.

I read a biography of McNamera. According to that, he _blatantly_
lied to pretty much everyone--the people, his own staff, Congress,
and the president, about the strategy in Vietnam. He told everyone
it would be fairly easy to win when he knew in fact it would be
long, difficult, and very expensive war. He relied on statistics
which he knew or should've known were false; and failed to consider
the political and cultural issues of the enemy. He put in "yes men"
who weren't competent.

Now, admittedly, I have not read McNamera's own works on Vietnam,
which are voluminous.

I always suspected sports were invented to give the masses
an outlet for their energy and divert their attention to
"healthful pursuits". This was both for the actual players
and the spectators.

Juvenal called it _Bread and Circuses_ in the old Roman
days - keep hoi polloi distracted from real life issues.

Still works.

"bread" in latin is panem, which is also the
name of the country in the _Hunger Games_ and
was derived from Juvenal's AD100 quotation.

An editorial I once read suggested that the real purpose of
sports is to get people cranked up and ready to fight the
next war.

The Internet has certainly made it easier for nutters to get
their opinions out there. It also makes it easier to do lots
of good things, but that takes more work and isn't nearly as
much fun.

It's questionable whether baseball would qualify as a sport in the
same sense as hockey, football, etc. There isn't enough violence,
and too much adherence to the rules. Not exactly warlike.
