Many indigenous customs were also forbiddon _on_ reserves. The colonial mess extended far beyond residential schools.

You can't fix the latter, but the first one can be fixed. Many reservations make money by catering to the vices of other americans - cigarettes, gambling, etc. Possibly tourism would be a possibility. I don't think the Custer thing resonates today. The man was an idiot and deserved what he got, it's the rest of the men who deserve some sympathy. In any case, we celebrate our home-grown opponents, look at the unreconstructed Confederates. -- Pete

I'm not so sure that people don't revere Custer based on several documentaries I've watched. Myself, I think he did a good job in 1860-1865. However, his attacks out west were against villages with few men there. When he got into a battle with warriors, he lost. There were mitigating circumstances, not just numbers. He and his troop had rollng block rifles, copper cartridges. They jammed easily after several minutes of firing due to heating of the cartridges and it took a knife to get them out. A number of Cavalry rifles were found with cartridges broken off or japped in the guns. Many of the Native Americans had Henry repeaters. Although manym ovies depict them as having bows and arrows and some spears. The US Cavalry at the time were not trained in handling skirmishers like Native Americans. And while he had 2 gatling guns available, he left them at the fort claiming they would slow him down. And since he didn't see well by the time of his last battle, he simply didn't see, and ignored warnings about, the hundreds of tipis there. His ego certainly got in the way of survival. -- JimP.

In Nazi Germany and Communist Russia it was necessary to be a member of the ruling party in good standing to get various perks such as a good job, admission to college, good housing, etc. Many apolitical people joined for that reason, and could have cared less about ideology. Another excellent resource is Victor Kravchenko's "I Chose Freedom". When it was published it was criticized as right-wing propaganda, but it was subsequently proven as all fact. Lenin and his Bolsheviks didn't take over in Russia by winning over the hearts and minds of the people. They did so by terrorizing them. Stalin continued that effort, and he was as ruthless and cruel as Hitler. As the victor in WW II, Stalin's crimes remained 'buried' until exposed much later, with much less publicity. In terms of propaganda, Stalin was superior. Most people saw Hitler for what he was. However, Stalin was revered by many Americans (e.g. "Mission to Moscow").

My father (who served in WWII) was racist and proud of it - he wanted to "send them all home" and thought that "they were all savages until we British came and taught them civilisation" and I even heard him say "they're not long down from the trees". He really believed it all, and he wasn't unusual for his time AFAICT.
