There could be more than one host, unless that isn't semantically
compatible with the concept of parasitism. Can a parasite have
more than one host? Or would "predator" be a more appropriate term?

I had assumed that employees were the hosts, but society at large seems
an acceptable alternative if we require a single host per parasite.

Sure. Toxoplasma gondii has 2 successive hosts: cats, and mice (or if
things go wrong, some other animal like you, but unless you can manage
to get eaten by cats, it'll be a dead end for that particular
parasite). It reproduces in the cat's digestive tract, and comes out

The more I think about it, neither can I; but while it may be the
prevailing view, it seems to me to be unhelpful, and depends so much on
the definition you choose to adopt for "altruism": if you define
altruism as "doing something for the benefit of others where there is no
possibility of deriving any satisfaction from the act", it becomes
trivially true, and therefore uninteresting.
ISTM rather less clear if you define altruism as "self-sacrifice for the
benefit of others being the highest moral duty, without which there is
no justification for existence", which is pretty much what its original
definition was, and seems to have been the version that Ayn Rand was
arguing against; it would be perfectly possible to be altruistic in that
scenario, as there is no prohibition against getting a warm glow from
the act of self-sacrifice (indeed, one could argue that the warm glow
was the whole point: the more altrustic you are, the more self-righteous
you can -- should? -- feel).
It's interesting that Altruists International (I wonder where they got
their mandate to speak for all altruists?) have three definitions of
altruism, none of which precludes getting a warm glow.

struck by a statement from Mother Teresa herself:
Right from the very beginning, I wanted to serve the poor purely for
the love of God.
