The other major branch, politics, is just as threatened by those who don't buy in - and political responses vary just as widely in severity from one society to the next as religious ones do. (OK, there's a third major branch - marketing - although they tend to prefer gentle, persistent persuasion. The leftists are digging under our beds looking for racism, and rightists are searching out immorality and corruption. These days, teachers are having a hard time of it since they are public service personnel and there is a war on against public employees. In my area, they bitch that teachers make too much and have it too easy, but no one seems to know what a proper salary should be. I know I would never want to be a teacher with what they have to deal with it (between the parents, students, and administration).

That is true of all salaries. Why is a train driver usually paid quite a bit more than a bus driver, even tho the drivers of normal city passenger trains have a much easier job than an urban bus driver ? > I know I would never want to be a teacher with what they have to > deal with it (between the parents, students, and administration). I wouldn't with high school just because so many of the kids are a complete pain in the arse to teach at that age, particularly when teaching them what they don't see the point of understanding. And I have never bought the line that the best teachers can always convince all their students of that with even the most abstruse subjects. Have fun convincing most modern kids why they should be fluent in Latin.
