Damn. There goes that old joke:

Q: What is Smokey the Bear's middle name?
A: The.

> But according to that, he was "Smokey the Bear" in the period I'm talking
> about. I even had that Golden Book, about his origins.

I remember the chorus of a song I heard back then:

Smokey the Bear, Smokey the Bear,
Prowlin' and a-growlin' and a-sniffin' the air.
He can find a fire before it starts to flame.
That's why they call him Smokey, that was how he got his name.

According to Smokey's Wikipedia article:

In 1952, the songwriters Steve Nelson and Jack Rollins had a successful song
named "Smokey the Bear". The pair said "the" was added to Smokey's name to
keep the song's rhythm.[3] During the 1950s, that variant of the name became
widespread both in popular speech and in print, including at least one
standard encyclopedia.[4] A 1955 book in the Little Golden Books series was
called Smokey the Bear and Smokey calls himself by this name in the book. It
depicted Smokey as an orphaned cub rescued in the aftermath of a forest
fire. From the beginning, Smokey's name was intentionally spelled
differently from the adjective 'smoky'.

The fictional character Smokey Bear, created by the art critic Harold
Rosenberg,[5] is administered by three entities: the United States Forest
Service, the National Association of State Foresters, and the Ad Council.
Smokey Bear's name and image are protected by U.S. federal law, the Smokey
Bear Act of 1952 (16 U.S.C. 580 (p-2); 18 U.S.C. 711).[6][7]

(Note: It's the "Smokey Bear Act of 1952"... *not* the "Smokey *the* Bear
Act of 1952!)

That was back when Pluto was a planet, right?

Considering it was demoted relatively recently, yes.

I think I have a Golden Guide to the Planets (or maybe to Astronomy) and
that would have Pluto listed as a planet.

I am still calling it a planet. If we can call a bat a flying fox, then
we can call Pluto a planet.

From several astronomy documentaries I've seen lately it has come out
that planetary astronomers didn't vote to change Pluto's status. It
was voted on by galaxy astronomers.

No wonder they diminished Pluto, their scale is in much bigger terms.

I started noticing the absence about 4 years ago. Last year every
calendar I looked at didn't have the phases. I couldn't tell if the
super expensive calenders sold at B&N had the data. It marks an
indication of useful knowledge being lost, e.g., no farming
knowledge of any kind.

I've always noticed phases of the moon. Some holidays are determined
by moon phases within a season. People plant based on the moon phase.

How about a moon phase clock, then you would be set till the battery failed.
There seems to be a lot of interest in such things based on these images. I
am astonished at how many wrist watches there are (click more at the bottom

Yes, but do people buy them because they really care about the phase of the
moon, or are they just looking for the next flashy gadget with which to win
the pissing war with their neighbours?

My wife, a research diver, pays attention to the phase of the moon
so she can select suitable tides. I pay attention so we can pick
good nights to go flying.

Would you define a "good night" w.r.t. moon phase? Do you need lots
of light or does it have something to do with tides?

An astronmer wanting to study galaxies, would pick a night when the
moon was new,not full, due to the glare.

As far as night flying goes, any night with decent ceiling and visibility
is good. Sometimes I like it really dark. But there's something about
chasing after a full moon - especially once you get away from the cities -
that's really special. Particularly the last one, when we watched it
come out of a total eclipse...

Flying from SNA to SMO on a clear, moonless night is simply incredible
from a 172.

OK. thanks. Watching the full moon seems to appeal to the reptilian
part of the brain. I didn't get to see that eclipse--just caught
a glimpse of a partial when the clouds cleared for a second.

Tides, and accompanying currents.

Humans do not move fast under water, normal swimming speed for a
diver is 15-16 meters per minute. 50 feet per minute for you
leftopondians. That is not very fast. So even a slight current
can mean a streneous swim.

Also, lots of marine animals have spawning etc at full moon.

The units of measure were not useful for me so I converted them.
The speed 50 ft./min. is approximately 0.57 MPH or 0.91 km/h. I did
not think that it was so low, and now, I see why currents are such an
issue.

The figure we were told was 1/2 knot. That works out the same.

I hate current dives.
