The other day, TCM aired a movie from 1975. I noticed some cultural differences... --Adult men and women usually wore a tie/jacket or dress (respectively) whenever they went out, and of course at work. --The adults were married, though not necessarily in good marriages. --Automobiles were big and luxurious inside. --Many TV sets were only b&w. --Goofy fast food place. --Lots of adults smoked at all times. Some kids smoked. --In different scenes, a character would be observed as not present and whereabouts unknown. Today, they'd be reached on their cell phone. --The telephones in a motel didn't have dials, which was still common back then. There weren't any computers involved in this movie, so I can't comment on that. (one desk in the background had a terminal on it.) Would anyone care to comments about other cultural differences? As to computers in 1976, they were certainly commonplace, but not as widespread as today. A small business would do its work by hand or send it out to a service bureau. I think by 1976 mini-computers were reasonably common in medium sized businesses. I just find it ironic that in 2016, modern computers will tell my car insurance company--falsely--that my mother is a new driver in my household, yet fail to pass along hospital medical records to a physician. Hospital computers record every time a patient yawns, but the data can't be organized or accessed, and critical information gets overlooked.

When I was building the house on a bare block of land in the very early 70s, I had to do all the research in the library and with govt publications I bought or conned the work library into getting, no internet. I did use the computer at work to do quite a bit of the design stuff, and a lot of share trading. I got my own LSI 11 with a 7.5MB hard drive and 8" floppies when I moved into the house in 73. The parents had an Apple II a bit later, used mostly for word processing. > As to computers in 1976, they were certainly commonplace, > but not as widespread as today. "Business wear" was initially required when I worked in Canary Wharf, but
was dropped, other than for "customer facing" roles, about 15 years ago,
and replaced with "business casual", but no jeans. Then a very senior
manager wore jeans to the office & surprise, surprise, the "no jeans" rule
was dropped. For the last 5 years, I've been working at home, which means
the "dress code" is PJs. :o)

When I was at Enormous Aerospace we were required to wear ties. There was a date in the fall on which jackets became mandatory and a date in the spring when they became optional--this would have been in the 1979- 1985 timeframe. At the Interplanetary Parachute Company, which was much smaller, there wasn't really a dress code--if we had a customer in we were expected to dress up otherwise as long as you didn't scare anybody just about anything went. Note, names have been changed to protect the guilty.

In fact mine was put into a drawer at night and pulled out to be put back on the stool in the morning. Next, in software development, dress was anything that covers up the naughty bits, except when customers came in for meetings or we were at exhibitions. Later still while embedded with a computer manufacturer it was suit & tie -- except in Engineering at the weekends. Then it was many years before I faced a customer again, so back to jeans & T-shirt. > other than that they're interview wear (and pray it still fits). Did my last job interview that actually resulted in unrecovery wearing blue & white made-to-measure moto leathers. Well they did ask how fast I could get there, and I had to pass the place on my way home. Mike

Early '80s I was still doing a lot of exhibitions and trying to make the pieces of kit borrowed from several different manufacturers talk to each other. At one I had the panels off a Benson pen-plotter (a low quality piece of equipment IMO, but we had a sales agreement...) and was underneath it with the phone. Yeah, in my suit and tie. We were selling serious CADCAM to engineering folk, and with the panels off quite a few came to have a look at what was "under the hood". My boss complained that I should take it behind a screen to get it working until I pointed out that we had had more feet on our piece of expensive carpet than at any other stage of the exhibition, and that having got their attention it was then his job to talk to them. So maybe we should have tried the nudity trick! Mike

I really miss those trade shows/exhibitions. Possibly a bit more in nostalgic hind sight than in the terror-filled moments just before opening time when some electrician accidentally killed the power to an entire wing of the hall. Good for schmoozing with your competitors, making connections "just in case", and admiring the Catherine Deneuve look-alikes at the Honeywell booths we always lucked out and got close booths near. > > We were selling serious CADCAM to engineering folk, and with the panels > off quite a few came to have a look at what was "under the hood". Several of my companies always kept a few of us geeks handy, in case the marketing/sales folks got a live one on the hook, they'd ask us to get deep into the innards with some of the select visitors. Of course this was back in the era when buyers actually cared what was under the hood. > > So maybe we should have tried the nudity trick! A certain disk drive vendor who shall remain nameless got just about as close to that as public nudity laws would allow with their booth bimbos. I felt sorry for the ladies, as most of them actually could expound in detail on the difference between imbedded servo controls and separate control tracks.

Possibly a bit more in > nostalgic hind sight than in the terror-filled moments I've had two of those, one was my fault. I was fully suited up, tie up to collar, waiting for the press to come in to ComputerVision's demo room to see the New All Singing All Dancing CDS/3000 and its N-A-S-A-D software. Only I could do the demo of the 2D/3D CADCAM software (internally called "the CADAM killer", yeah right!) because I was the one and only designer /and/ implementer of the visual and command aspects, and only I knew which menu items worked and which were a picture with no command underneath. But on the plus side I'd been showing early development CADCAM software in demos for 10 whole years by then. So I'm sitting on the desk next to the monitor and keyboard looking at them. "Hmmm, that connector looks just like a US phone one." And indeed it was for the early Suns, the CDS/3000 in question was a 2/120 clad in new sheet-metal. Unplug the keyboard of an early Sun and what happens? The machine halts. Oh FSCK! The fastest reboot, start "CADAM killer" and get pretty engineering drawing back onto screen faster than I've ever done. Later I learned that reconnecting the keyboard and typing "c" would have restored to earlier state, but we'd had them for just over 3 months, and had no time for learning about SunOs in general, only the stuff essential to porting our software. Earlier was an organisation snafu. We were going to announce new product at version 1.0 to the press in a London hotel. Using borrowed Prime computer, borrowed Tektronix T4014 graphics, etc. Arrived at hotel early evening with 1/2" tape containing software & demo database in hand. Bit of a problem here -- no tape drive on computer (Prime 300). So with considerable trepidation I set out on the London Underground (Wanda Gershwitz: It's not a terrorist organisation. I checked.") at v. early hour where the rumour is that the electrical noise will fsck your disk and tapes. I have one of each to get to Prime's UK HQ, transfer, get back by 10am, install and get demo ready by 11. Need to be out of sight, and I'm the demoer. Out of sight we have just the one KSR, yes clank clank as I'm installing -- with sotto-voce from the platform during the first presentation "Can you be quieter?" Mike

In my high-school yearbook, you couldn't guess at a person's gender after hearing the person's hair color. All the students had their natural color, about 90% brown. Today, women seem to be of a different species, they mostly have blonde or reddish hair but the males are still stuck with brown hair. Men's socks had an actual size, much like shoes still do. Sleeve lengths on men's shirts used to come in one-inch gradations, not two inch. Wrist watches used to make a "ticking" sound; I was always concerned because I couldn't hear an expensive watch with one of my ears. Now I can't hear anything with either ear, even a cheap watch. Replacement pencil leads were not specified in the MKS system. Ink came in little bottles of ink. I'm not sure but I think there were less than 20 colors in a set of crayons. Coffee was often made at home using a device called a "percolator". If you wanted to buy something you gave the clerk some money and she probably gave you some change. The clerk had to puzzle out, from first principles, how much money to give you as change. People didn't say "North of" or "South of" or "double down"; speech was more direct and the meaning was often obvious - even to the elderly. The sound level in movie theaters was at a pleasant level, not set so high that one got a headache after a few minutes. Food had less Calories, I could eat anything I wanted and not gain weight.
