That linker was a pig (or still is, I guess).

I remember, back in the day, writing programs that used a Calcomp
graphics library on a 3090. They took around 20 minutes, wall
time, to link. As a student assistant, I was paid by the hour,
but it as still aggravating.

It was a revelation when the first HP workstations arrived, and
gnuplot came along.

If you've ever wondered why gnuplot's PostScript terminal has all
these circles and squares where each quadrant is either filled
or isn't (just run "test" on a PostScript terminal in gnuplot):
I created these for a friend. His advisor had extremely strict
standards of what graphs should look like in a PhD thesis,
and it had always been done by a draftsman before.

Compiling software from the net could be a headache. Of course,
these were the days where everything had #ifdef __HPUX__ or similar,
long before today's configure scripts.

Of course, I haven't used HP-UX for more than 20 years. It would
be interesting to sit down at one of these old boxes and try the
look and feel today.
