The sound is continuously bad, and varying in a very irritating way. Yes, I remember those Nakamichi decks. But generally, cassettes were a big step down from existing vinyl records and reel-to-reel tapes. Compared to a 1/4-inch 4-track tape running at 7 1/2 inches per second, a cassette has an inherent 9dB disadvantage in signal-to-noise ratio - Dolby just made up the difference. And getting decent high-frequency response out of cassettes wasn't easy.
