I think it stood for Virtual Storage Personal Computing, and USC (East) ran it on the 370 and then Amdahl mainframe while I was an undergrad circa 1980. Each user had 16K of card space (maybe non-students got more?) to edit on 3270s and submit with JCL as though it were a card deck. The result could go to the printer, or, I think, back to a virtual printer in your account which you could also access at the terminal. Similarly, you could have a virtual card printer, and you could use that to game the 16k limit by having some of your decks printed to it so they also seemed to live in your account. The fly in *that* ointment is that the sysadmins would randomly delete virtual card jobs when they felt like it. -- columbiaclosings.com What's not in Columbia anymore..
