Both Egyptian hieroglyphs and Sumero-Akkadian cuneiform have a concept of
determinatives, prescribed forms which indicate something about the following
word (such as Sumerian DINGIR "a god's name follows").
Later Egyptian uses some symbols for their sound values.
Old Persian cuneiform (as n the Behistun inscriptions) are entirely alphabetic.
