I know of a case (I dare not say exactly where) where the intended result was surprising. Shortlist of two; staff invited to hear a presentation from each: - Well qualified UK candidate with respectable research team, good vision, good people skills. Good presentation. - Apparently qualified candidate, currently working in the UK, but of overseas origin. No apparent vision, apparently good research team. Appalling presentation, muddled and wandering. Second candidate got the job, largely on the basis of a stronger research team which would help ratings. That team turned out to be no better than the competing one. I will refrain from commenting on the subsequent management. -- Using UNIX since v6 (1975)...
