Whooping cough cases increase in Tennessee by 268% over 2023 as national cases spike Nov 27 2024 "Cases have skyrocketed nationwide," Flores said in a statement via email. "The levels that are being reported are higher than pre-pandemic. We have had a couple of cases, but the CDC has reported seeing record numbers. It’s a vaccine-preventable disease." The CDC attributed three deaths to pertussis in 2023. All three cases were in children: One was over a year old while the other two were less than a year old, the data shows. Flores said most cases resulting in hospitalizations are for unvaccinated infants less than 5 months old. Flores also noted that some of those hospitalizations occur because of unvaccinated mothers and he encouraged pregnant mothers to get a booster shot in their third trimester to provide better immunity to their child when they are born. The first round of vaccinations begins at two months with subsequent shots at four and six months, then again at two years, the start of kindergarten and the teen years. Creech said whooping cough is not a disease that tops the list of diseases most parents think about, but he said the vaccines prevent severe reactions and deaths in infants. https://www.tennessean.com/story/news/health/2024/11/27/tennessee-us- sees-huge-spike-in-whooping-cough-cases-what-to-know/76484889007/

And the opposite can be true. Chicken pox
was common enough in children but as an adult
it is shingles, a most awful disease. Ditto
for mumps, which is a nuisance in children
but serious and even deadly for adults.
PS: When I was growing up parents held
"chicken pox parties", where they would
deliberately expose their children to the
disease so all the neighborhood kids would
catch it and recover from it at the same
time. Normally done in the summer so no
school was missed.
