The heavy rain that hit Jeddah was the highest ever recorded rainfall in 
the coastal city, the spokesperson for Saudi Arabia’s National Center 
for Meteorology (NCM) Hussein al-Qahtani said on Friday.

The rain on Thursday 24 NOVEMBER 2022 lasted for about eight hours – 
from 0800 HOURS to 1700 HOURS – and amounted to 179.7 millimetres of 
water, according to the center’s monitoring stations. The highest level 
of rainfall in Jeddah was previously recorded in 2009, when NCM recorded 
111 mm of rain.

It closed roads to Mecca, Islam's holiest city, state media reported. 
Jeddah, a city of about four million people located near the Red Sea, is 
often referred to as the "gateway to Mecca", where millions of people 
perform the Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages every year.
